View Full Version : Anti-Bark Collar - reviews/suggestions

As some of you may know, we have a very tiny little dog called Booby. And when I say tiny, i mean under 2 lbs (fully grown, almost 4 years old). Despite the inconsiderable size he manages to produce a sh!t load of noise while running outside: not so much during the day unless he's chasing squirrels, but A LOT when it's dark. I think he's just barking at the shadows and imaginary things he can't see. He seems to be enjoying it as he can be yapping away until someone loses their patience and goes to catch him in the back yard.

I personally had just about enough and i'm sure so did my neighbours. So i did a bit of a research about different types of collars that can be used to stimulate the effectiveness of anti-bark training and now i need to hear some first hand experiences. I don't think that an actual shocker is an option given the size of the dog (and the fact that i don't want to have a fried pigeon for dinner), but there are also the spray and the ultrasound ones.

has anyone tried this? any recommendations?

Some of the spray collars work quite well and can be set to go off when they bark, and by remote. Some of them can be bulky for a tuft of hair like your pup though! Other dogs learn to bark until the spray runs out then go ape-sh*t crazy and do as they please.
Another approach is to actually teach your dog how to bark on command (gets a reward for barking). Once you have established a command for bark, it is easier to teach him to shut the @&#$ up (gets a reward for being quiet). :)
Good luck!

your dog def needs some training classes, but 4yrs already, not as easy to train when he was little

go to pet-mart to ask for advice for the Anti-Bark Collar, small dogs are so annoying, they bark like there's no tmr

My brother had a black lab and she would bark like crazy and annoy everyone. They got her a shock collar which would give a stronger shock each time she barked. At first it helped a little until she figured out how it worked. She would eventually bark rapidly even though the collar would shock her until it would shut off (5-8 good barks). Needless to say that was the end of the collar working properly...lol.

If may work on your dog as every dog will take to it differently. I would just try a few and like stevenlung suggested maybe some obedience by some one/some place.

Muzzle it! .....couple of friends tried it and it worked, everytime it barks repeatedly you muzzle it, once it quiets down take it off....worth a shot!

I also agree with MSMitch's approach. :)

MSMitch and Flagrum i agree with as well train him or muzzle him either way he needs some way of being shown that barking is not a desired action

Ceasar would probly just *SH!* and snap his fingers and somehow booby would stop...he has magic in him or he's the only "calm/assertive" person on the planet! lol

They make muzzles that small - usually the blue nylon kind. But then he may develop an aversion to the muzzle (if it's used essentilly as punishment, then when it is really needed (i.e., visiting someone like me at the vet hospital) it can become a pain in the a55 to put it on. Ideally, dogs should not be left unattended with this type of muzzle on.
P.S. Is that a chicken thighbone in the background??? Maybe I should give you my card now - we could trade vet services for speed 3 parts :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

Then tie up his front paws too! .....j/k :chuckle

Actually in both of my friends cases the dogs were not biters so they never needed muzzles, they were actually quite friendly but just liked to bark at everything :) ...so in that case it may work, ...but I'm no expert.

Cute mutt by the way Speedbaby :)

Yup, I specialize in small animal surgery - orthopedics, soft tissue, spinal surgery, etc - I'm the guy you hope to never have to meet (professionally), but are glad we're there if you need us!

I also did a lot of dog training in my earlier years before and thorughout vet school. Mainly German Shepherds, Shutzhund trials, obedience, agility, and other such activities.

Cheers!
