Does anyone know how to disable the AC unit turning on whenever the defrost or floor vents are selected?

I drive a lot to work, and I'm trying to conserve my fuel... Having the AC turning on when I don't even realize it is not helping the situation.

Thanks,

you can remove the fuse/relay, I forget which one, that is labeled in your user manual.. it should be A/C acc. or something..

but its better to keep it.. either way, the pump doesn't turn on below 0* degrees IIRC..

Does removing the fuse/relay also disable manual use of the AC (for instance, just turning it on normally), or does it only disable the automatic turning on?

Completely disables it. If I recall correctly someone hacked the circuit board that controls the A/C to decouple them.

Do keep in mind there is a reason that the A/C kicks in... it prevents the window from misting up.

On my M3 it disabling by pushing a/c button.
Minus is - it need to be pushed every time when
engine restarted and mode is changed.
Computers ruling the world , sometimes we don't
like as they do it.
To disable a/c permanently is not so good.
It need to work sometimes to lubricate.

Oh, I completely agree. I don't want to disable my AC permanently, I still love having it on during those hot days. And I do realize that the AC kicks on for defrost because the dehumidified air works better.

I have a problem with the computer deciding what's best for me, when I want to decide what's best for me. I like leaving my vents on defrost all the time, because then the air is never blowing directly on me (but keeps the cabin hot/cool). But because of that, I don't want the AC on all the time.

I want the power to be in my hands, not the cars!

I read on the mazda3 forums that someone disabled it by taking apart their control dial and putting a wedge in behind, so that the dial didn't trip whatever sensor/clip when it was turned to defrost. Maybe I'll try something like that.

I guess I'm just picky :)

Probably you meaning this:

It seems to me it self deception and man simply disabled keys.
I haven't seen schematic of climate control unit.
Logic suggests that processor geting only scan code from dial,
remaining does programm.

If you absolutely want to decouple them they I suggest you cut one of wires on the control side of the A/C relay and insert a switch. Mount the switch somewhere convenient and you will be able to thrwart the computer's attempt to turn on the A/C.
