It will stretch the tire, 225s just role over enough to protect the lip a little bit. 215 is fine on the tire if you are just doing day to day driving. The stretch can heighten a tire blowout depending what you hit or or hard you push it. Constant contact on the sidewalls in turns will wear them faster causing a blow out. The stretch seemed to also heighten road noise a little bit. I know the tires were different etc. but the ones I can compare with are in the same class.

Regular day to day driving then sport the 215s, I liked the look. But if you plan on tracking or running the car hard often then do the 225s. Because you're talking 17" rim having the larger profile will help prevent all this. It all comes down to how you will ride on them in the end.

You should check the website for the tire manufacturer. They usually publish info on what rim-widths are workable for each of their tires.

215s on a 8" wide rim fit fine...a very mild stretch. I'm running 215/40/18s.
