Fitting 16" snow tires on the 2.3L GT Hatch

So, long story short the two front stock tires split on me (less than 50,000 kms) and I had to buy two new front tires. I opted to get summer tires, but now I need to get 4 winter tires.

Do I have to put the same sized 205/50/R17 on there, or can I get away with putting smaller ones if I get steel wheels? I'm just learning that I can do this, but hoping to find a used set int he coming weeks.

205/50/R17 summer / 205/55/16 winter for me ..
