Yes, many people have this problem. Search for it using the search function as there is a lot of info about this topic on this forum. There are many things you can do to help with it, such as change your tranny oil to full synthentic and/or add solid shifter base bushings, but I don't think there is a single 'fix' for it.

amsoil is what u want, it can be quit expensive
http://www.amsoil.com/

u can have a very simple problem such as u having a mat thats not designed for ur mazda 3... try taking that out first before u go spending money on something u might not even need.

Look at the sponsor thread and find CTA Motorsports. Contact and send a PM to CTA Patrique who participates on this thread. He sells many different types of synthetic engine and transmission oils, among a billion other performance parts. A nice guy and you can arrange pick-up or shipping. He is located in Brampton.

Amsoil makes a great range of synthetic oil products. I use Amsoil 5W-30 engine oil in my MS3 and have been very happy with a noticeable difference in engine smoothness at start-up, idle and also in boost. The turbo and engine in the MS3 generates a lot of heat and the change to Amsoil seems to have lessened this to some extent also. You can get Amsoil in Canadian Tire or Part Source and it is the same price as most of the Group3 Synthetics like Castrol, Mobil 1 etc.

For manual transmission oil, I am running redline MT-90 in the MS3 as per the recommendations of many 3 and MS3 owners. I purchased my MT-90 from CTA Patrique as I couln't find it anywhere else.

All this said, you really shouldn't have a "grinding" going from 1st to second. Does it happen each time or just occassionally? At what RPM are you shifting from 1st to 2nd?

It happens almost all the time, but its worst when its cold.
I shift gears around 2500 to 3000 rpm.
And its not the mats .........
