So this past week, sometimes when i start the car in the morning (when it's cold) it makes a really loud hissing noise from the engine bay. It is really loud like i'm even embarassed because im not driving a crap box car. This also happened once after i came out of class after waiting about 3 hours between starting up the car.

Anyone have this problem? I got to take my car into the dealer to get this checked as well as the engine burning up oil thing........ sigh

Snakes??? :whoa

Seriously, I have no idea what that could be just by what you wrote, but i hope you get it looked at and fixed...

Does the hissing noise sound similiar to compressed air being released or vacuumed? Are you able to isolate the general proximity of where this noise if coming from?

not sure. I didnt even bother looking at it. It was pretty cold this morning lol. But i do know that it is from the engine bay. I'll have the whole thing looked at. Im wishing i get a new engine under warrenty from this or the engine eating up the oil thing lol *crosses finger*

It's most likely the belt you hear and its caused by the belt tensioner does it on mine also when starting cold or in humid weather.I already had the tensioner and belt replaced once but it's doing it again.....I guess back to the dealer :)

Funny thing, i went to airport mazda and complained about the engine ticking noise that everyone has...... They then found out it was teh tensioner and replaced it about a month ago. Ugh, i need to get this checked. Really need it before the warrenty runs out

Check on the top of the intake manifold. The there should be a rubber/plastic cap on there. If it's missing it will make that loud hissing sound.

I've been having the same problem as Soyabean. When I start my car (usually when the engine is cold) there is a loud hissing-type sound. My warranty is over, so I don't want to take my car to the dealer unless I have to.

Can you let me know what the problem is after you get it checked out? Thx

I have the same problem . I noticed it last winter when I started my car and was cleaning the snow on the car. I have checked this on the forum as it has been discussed before and everyone was saying its the tensioner just like Flagrum_3 said. I havent checked it at the dealer yet.

Its a loud hissing sound that comes from the engine bay around the belt area and only when started in the cold and goes away after a few minutes.

where is the intake manifold?

Is that the same noise when you start a car in cold and you get this noise going on and off, something like hissing noise, but you can tell that something has just turns on and off like every few seconds. Cuz i have that, i think its normal, or atleast thought it was normal..

in my case when the car is started in the cold the noise comes on and doesnt turn off until a few minutes maybe when the car warms up a bit.

That's exactly my symptoms, and it is definitely the tensioner!...If you guys get it done (tensioner replaced) make sure they change the belt too. They might give you a hard time about the belt has they have to take off the A/C belt also and the only way is to cut it, meaning they would have to replace 2 belts!! ...But just tell them that the belt has been compromised by the tensioner and you want a new one covered under warranty as the tensioner has most likely caused undo wear!

Flagrum,

I've had this problem with the hissing sound on cold start since forever (2-3 years now). Should I be concerned? I had Avante look at it two years ago and they said everything is fine. My car is out of warranty now...

Well you might be out of luck, being out of warranty! I don't think its something to be overly concerned about, except if it blows a belt on you.You could see if they kept a record of your initial visit and point out to them that the noise still exists and that there is a TSB on it! ...you might be able to convince them to change it.

Trust me, take care of it sooner than later, or you'll end up stranded like me! ON the other side, the dealerships aren't so helpful sometimes. If they can't recreate the issue, the do nothing. I heard mine early, had the dealer look at it, told them "Look at the tensioner, its making noises it shouldn't"... they gave me the car back (was in for recalls) and said they found nothing. 3 days later the tensioner literally exploded taking the belt with it. Stranded me, thankfully I have the MAP warranty. They towed my car to the nearest dealership (same one), and the ended up replacing the serp belt and tensioner, but not the AC belt... get the car back and what do I hear... the ac belt squeeking... I won't deal with that dealership again, so I'm SOL on the ac belt.
I had the worst case, tensioner blew up.... don't let it get that far if you can help it! And insist on the AC belt replacement too. It WILL get stretched removing it, and likely will squeel after.

Hey flagrum, I noticed the sound last year... but it kinda went away and isn't something that happens EVERYTIME is tart in the cold.

I am still under warranty however lol. Seeing that I only randomly have the sound..is it the same thing? and if so how would I go about telling them the problem? Or should they have odne it becuase of the TSB out on it?

Hmmm, so i started my car again after not driving it for about a week and it made the hissing noise. I popped open the hood and the sound was coming from the left side of the car (when looking into the engine bay). It is beside the coolant tank. The sound sounded like it was coming from the belt or something like that.

Now if it was the tensioner, then that might make sense since i never had this problem before in the winter and this only happened after they replaced my tensioner about a month or 2 ago.

But now i have to wait til like end of March or whenever i decide to take this car out to get it checked and fixed

Yeah I didn't have the sound all summer... it seems to occur in cooler damp weather...so yeah, periodically.Once the engine has been warmed up it goes away and will not occur until the engine gets cold again and the conditions are right! On cold 'dry' days it doesn't happen lol! Take it in and mention the symtoms and the TSB, I'm sure every Mazda dealer should have knowledge on this one!
