View Full Version : MS CAI to SRI

Since I recently got the AEM air straightener I decided to try out the MS CAI as the MS SRI, haha. I know people on M3F have done it before without the straightener but I really didn't want to try it, with the turbulence and all. Seems to be working fine so far, and everything is staying tight. I definitely noticed an increase in exhaust, spooling and BPV sound.
I really like it this way, I'll just have to see if the ECU learns it properly. I like that I won't have to worry about hydro locking the engine in deep puddles/heavy rain now. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

I've suggested others, such as silvermist to do the same thing and he has never had a CEL yet...MS-CAI to MS-SRI + Air Straightener = OEM Mod goodness...looks esp good on TR MS3's...

I've ran MS SRI mode just over 2 months without the air straightener. Well... MS CAI without the straightener itself is bad, but I did not any CEL nor any noticeable issues when I was running SRI mode.

i've had alhope setup for a couple months now, no problem at all. I never ran it in full CAI so I'm not sure if there are any differences.
My car doesn't knock, fuel cut, cel etc... so far so good. I just wish engine noise is louder... its still close to non existent compare to n/a cars with intake.

you should make a video of it, i'd love to know how it sounds :pop
i still have my stock airbox, waiting till spring before i decide on which CAI/SRI to replace that piece of crap with

Hey Al, sorry for asking but what does the air straightener do? About a month ago I got a spare filter from Joe and made the change to SRI for winter and havn't noticed any change other then the fact that I don't get any CELs anymore like I use to.

I know you asked Al, but I gotta chime in...
the air straightener turns your "ghey" turbulent air flow into "straight", less-turbulent air flow so your MAF can read the air flow correctly and consistently...
I'm sure others can come off a little funnier than I...lol...

Yea, just makes a more true air mass being sensed by the sensor. I get less than 1/2 the backfiring during shifts (4000-6000rpm) thank I used to without the straightener.

11-06-2008, 07:25 PM
So is this something you add to the inside of the filter, cause I really can't see a difference from your set up vs mine. Also does this apply to SRI only applications or will it work with CAI set ups as well? As for back firing, I get a really really loud bang once in a while during hard driving, other then this it has a low rumble to it between shifts.

It goes inside the first tube, right infront of the MAF sensor. The MS CAI is meant to be a CAI not SRI, so the straightener is meant to be used with the CAI but will also make the SRI mode work better too.

how come the air straightener is needed on MS3's MAF?
how come it's not offered for MS6? do we not need it? i'm runnin' a Fujita CAI on my MS6...

Should the striaghtner cause better fuel econ. since the MAF is reading a truer flow? Just wondering, cause ever since I changed to SRI mode about a month ago, my fuel EPA reading from the car is sooo much higher. I use to get readings of 10L/100 km and now its consistantly around 13 - 14 L/100km.
I use to get CEL once in awhile before the conversion, but I haven't gotten one in about 2000kms. My driving habits are the same and if anything I'm much easier on the gas pedal then before. Any links or should I just take it in to have checked out.

I went from 10L to 10.8L average all city after SRI conversion. =(
i am getting around 9L all local @ COBB's. the metal pipe got more heat than rubber's, maybe?

Where did everybody get their air straightener? I know they are available online (don't want to place a like $15.00 order and pay $30.00 in shipping and then wait two months for it to arrive), but I was wondering if anyone had them locally.
On a side note - I've been using my CAI for almost a year and I haven't experienced any CEL, stuttering or anything of the sort. I just want to see if it improves my fuel efficiency :) .

$17 or $19 US on SU, $20 shipping. If you don't want to pay that, you are SOL unfortunately. Pat doesn't sell them.

I bought mine at RPM store:
http://www.therpmstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=122&products_id=826
Was only $10 shipping.
Less then $30 CDN to my door.
I never had a CEL, or anything major, but there was for sure a sort of reluctance at certain RPM ranges, usually 3000-4000 and felt like I was fluttering the throttle ever so slightly. The straightener seems to have gotten rid of that. As for fuel eff. I'm not certain, car seems to be getting a consistent 9.2-9.5L/100kms in the city, before and after intall. I also put on my winter tires and so its hard to tell.

This intake is sometimes regarded as problematic. I've read that it's discontinued but I also see that existing stock can still be purchased. I want an intake but don't want to be stuck w/ a defective product. Are you guys happy with your Mazdaspeed intake or would you recommend the CPE XCel?
I wish they would just release an updated version w/ the air straightener b/c I prefer to stick with genuine Mazda (AEM whatever) parts. So, it hasn't been recalled but they stopped making them b/c they suck or they have an overstock issue.

The MS CAI with air straightener should work the exact same as the CP-e CAI. Just get a used MS CAI from some one and buy the straightener.
I had some hesitation and studdering with the MS CAI, but it all went away when I got the air straightener.

I just installed my MS CAI last weekend in SRI mode. Only becuase I didn't have the time to do a full install down into the fender. I have the AEM air staightener as well.
Right away the noise is a lot louder. Funny though I really don't feel much of a power increase vs the stock intake "box". But I have picked up a little hesitation between 2500 and 3500 RPM. The turbo used to spool fairly quickly in this range, but now it's more of a 1-2 go. Above this the cars pulls nice and strong except for shifting which leads to another 1-2 go instead of instant goooooo.
I hope this goes away once I install the lower piece of the intake.
Any thoughts?

Since I've never had it in CAI mode yet, I take it you're insinuating this may cure my issue?
I hope I get some time to finish the installation soon.

Hey guy's, sorry this is slightly off topic but my name is gerry sica
from prm-jetstream intake systems , prmracing.com, we just finished our Mazda 3 N/A kit & are know looking to make a kit for a MazdaSpeed3.
It will be a SRI but also a CAI,drawing ambient air from the fender well safely,
no need to go down low.
just thought i'd let you know!!
should have a kit available soon.

I'll be buying an intake just for the sound. I don't expect any gains just an occasional CEL. I've never had one yet because I'm running stock. Can't wait to get one this spring/summer.

since you don't have any tuning solution yet (I'm guessing), you may want to unplug your battery for 10 - 15min and let your ECU re-learn the new parameters with a easy 50km+ drive.
Speedy2008: get one...be the donor car even! I've never had a CEL due to the intake.

I'm going to get a MS CAI or CP-E CAI. Don't want to be a test car. Even if I was, I would expect the intake to be gratis.

Well I finished the full CAI install this weekend. Going from "MS CAI" I really notice it. Acceleration and hesitation <3000 RPM has improved quite a bit. Very happy with the feel of things now. But but dyno is impressed.

I've got the COBB SRI on my MS3 and did notice an increase in power at high revs above 3,000 rpm, but off the line I've lost power. That however is common with most cars.

this 'hesitating' you guys are talking about, I think I'm experiencing it when shifting from 1st to 2nd. but its hard to tell since I bought my MS3 with the AEM intake and never felt it without. it sorta takes a second to go when switching up to 2nd, takes effort to get a very smooth shift -- is this hesitating? and you say the air straightener will help this?
