This is kinda weird. I hear a whistling sound like a window is slightly open (checked the windows & the moonroof & they're not) when I'm going highway speeds. I'm wondering if it's coming from the hood deflector???? Any ideas?

Listen and check next time you're on the highway to see if the sound is actually coming from your driver's door near the back of the door and where the top of the interior of the door meets with the glass.

If it is not coming from there, it could indeed be a combination of turbulent air flowing around from your hood deflector and windshield wipers.

just a thought did you happen to get winter tires...some tires make a noise. or could be a seal on the door not sitting properly..

I think it's unlikely it's the bug-deflector, unless it has not been installed correctly!! I've had mine on for 3+ years; no noise, no problems...just as an example.

Do you have power windows and do they make any noise when you close them? ....clunk or bang? If not, you could try cleaning the rubber seals around your doors and the window seals (take like a popsicle stick and run it along the inside of the seal) to start, there could be debris in there.Wipe all your doors and sub-frame with a clean cloth where the door seals! and then see if the sound persists.....just some thoughts thrown out there! :)

It's not the winter tires as I just had those put on yesterday and this sound has been happening since I got the car new a couple weeks ago.

The door seal theory sounds plausible though as it definitely does sound like a wind whistling that you hear when something isn't sealed properly. My windows do seem to seal with a clunk sound so I think they are closing properly but I'll check that too.

My 04 had a problem with the drivers door seal, same wind noise on the highway. They replaced it under warranty and that fixed it.

We had a wind deflector installed on our 08.5 sedan GT because that is the car we take on trips etc. I noticed right away some wind noise at highway speeds that wasn't there before. It is a Mazda part installed at the dealer. The noise isn't really loud or that annoying but I did notice it.

+1. That is why I posted to listen for the sound near the driver door seals. I had the same problem with the 2005 hatch and the seal was replaced and fixed under warranty. I think I also have this noise in my MS3, but haven't noticed it all the time. However, that could be that my music or exhaust, is often too loud to hear it...:chuckle

I'm going to have the dealer look at it when I take it in for the 8,000km service.

So MBD, it is highly likely to be your door seals, but if not, it can be turbulent air from the deflector that you may only notice at certain times pending wind direction, speed etc...

The more I think about it, the more likely I think it's the door seals because the sound is persistent and fairly loud all the time. I'm getting a block heater put in in a couple weeks so I'll mention it then. If they don't have time to look at it, I'll probably just get them to take a look at my service or over the holidays.
