Could anyone point me to a comparision between the brightness of LED and incadescent bulbs? I want to replace my turn signals and possible backup lights with LEDs, but I them to be at least as bright as the the stock incandescent bulbs.

Thanks!

Hi.
Small lamps have efficiency 5-10 lm/W,
LEDs have 40-150lm/W
In real live this ratio is 1:4 - 1:6.
From my experience with 1W LEDs (Osram and Luxeon) , 0.25W LED is lighting as 1W lamp.

Thanks for the info. Of course the other thing I will have to worry about is colour temperature... if the output is mostly in the infrared it doesn't really matter how bright the output is!

The other problem is that the housings are designed for incandescent bulbs, i.e. a nearly omni-directional point source of light (radiating in all directions). The reflectors at the rear of the housings use this to make the light source appear much larger than it is.

LEDs are also tiny light sources but are usually fairly directional; by design most LED lights have a number of small LEDs all facing the same direction (usually towards the outside of the light housing) which is completely the opposite direction they should be pointing, to take advantage of the OEM reflector. So not only are your LEDs less bright, but they become a fairly small point source of light compared to what you see using the OEM incandescents/reflectors.

I've tried quite a few different led bulbs with straight and directional designs, but nothing has come close to the stock bulbs performance. When they can fit 4 to 5 1 watt leds into a tower I might try again, otherwise leds are a waste of money for exterior lights.

I have OEM LED tail lights and they are working quite well.
There is used (4W/0.4W) LED instead (21W/5W) bulb.
The high mount brake bulb (16W) is replaced by (2.4W) LED.

I agree. I've tried LED turn signals and they are just not bright enough during the day. Well, they are "bright" enough it's just that they are so small and usually one or a couple facing outwards that it's not easy to pick out.
