View Full Version : Rust in Center Hub of Wheel: Do caps exist to cover area?

Hi guys,

Did some searching on the forums about this but couldn't find an answer so I'll post my question.

I have a 2008 GT that I bought this summer. When I removed the stock 17" alloys for the first time a few weeks ago so I could put on my winters, I noticed 2 things. One, there was already rust forming on the back of my alloy wheels, right around the inner area of the middle of the wheel. Second, the center hub area of the wheel structure itself was also starting to rust on all 4 wheels. So obviously I was like "WTF is this?!".

Well since then, I've read through some old threads here and I see this "center hub rust" issue is a common occurence for almost everyone's car. I've also been looking at a lot of cars on the road and most cars have this rust as well.

My question is, does Mazda (or 3rd party) sell caps for the center hub of the wheel so that at least that part can be covered up and perhaps even prevent more rust from forming? Please note that I am NOT asking about hubcaps that cover the whole wheel, I am asking only about the center hub area of the wheel. I've seen some other cars that have some sort of a cap (at least on the rear wheels) so I know it's possible, just wondering if it's available for Mazda.

Thanks!!

This has been brought up before... no one has a cap.... even Allen at SimplyTire just used black caliper paint to paint the center part of each hub......

Thanks NC, searched a bunch of threads but didn't realize that it had been determined there were no caps for the center hub of Mazda wheels.

Strange that no 3rd party manufacturer offers them? If anyone knows of one that does let us know! :)

If you spray it with lubricant such as WD40, it will make it look alot better

Don't worry about the rust, it is purely surface. Keep the hub lubricated with anti seize is about all you can do.

48 hours after my new car was delivered, there was already light rust from the wash they did for delivery. No matter what you do, that area will rust. Putting a cap on may actually retain water and make it worst. Best to put a coat of black paint and antiseize for the winter.
