theres so many issues with the 3 that the noise of the power steering is nothing compared to the many many other bigger issues, taking it in to a dealer wont get shit done, ive done that many many times for all the problems, just dont think about it, turn up ur volume to at least 10 and u wont hear any of the damn noises.

Let me shed a little bit of positive light.

Even though our pumps may be loud its because they are a seperate electric pump for the steering. (Most cars have the pump driven by belt off the engine).

Advantages to this are less strain on the engine thus improving performance and milage. So its a good tradeoff in my opinion.

Damn but that thing sounds like a chipmunk on crack!

Maybe is because i took the sound system that i had on and now i can listen to that and is weird for me. (last time did'nt had filters on the stock stereo and everytime you accelerated sounded like supercharge car) Now the car has the the stock BOSE sound system and i can hear that!

but thanks for the replys!!!

if anything il let you guys know.:gone

how much more performance and mileage do we get by Mazda using a electric pump? Try reselling the car privately with a noisy pump. good luck. I rather have a quiet pump and sacrific a half mile per gallon of gas
just my 2 cents worth...

Hey guys and girls from Halifax....been lurker here for awhile...this is the most informative mazda3 site. Don't mean to hijack this site a month later, but atleast I used the search function (ha ha).

First post - I've had my 04 Mazda3 GT sedan for almost 5 years and today I noticed that my power steering noise seems much louder and is noticeable ALL the time, not only when turning the steering wheel. Don't know if I'm being paranoid because it's almost 5 years old, but the noise was heard from the cabin upon startup this afternoon. Fluid is good and no leaks. Just called the dealer and they want $90 diag charge...awaiting a call from the service manager at CITY Mazda - Halifax. Steering seems 100% fine and car is working good. Don't know if the cold weather has anything to do with this as today is the coldest day of the year.

Any comments?

maybe the bearings in the pump are toast? like, similar to how a wheel bearing would make a constant whirrling noise. maybe?

Hey guys, hate to bring up this thread again, but that's the point of search I guess ;)

I just picked up a 07 mazda 3 and I noticed this noise as well. It's strange because it seems to only occur when the car is warmed up. Basically it goes away while driving, and then as the car comes to a stop, it gets louder and stays loud while the car is stopped. If I twist the wheels while it's stopped (Yes I know this is bad :P) the whine gets louder, so I'm pretty sure it's coming from the pump.

From what I read above, it seems like most people only hear the noise when turning the wheels, not when the car is just idling?

Anyone else have this problem?

All the time and is very anoying, I've even thought of getting rid of the car because of this or putting some money into it and buy some B-Quite for the firewall and hope that minimize the noise.

it might get louder on some days because as the temperature drops, the fluid thickens, thus the pump has to work harder... with any pump (electric or mechanical), it'll make more noise when it has to work harder
switching to a quality synthetic fluid could help cut this down

Is this the same sound as the whining sound I hear while the car is coming to a stop? I've noticed that when I'm coming to a stop I hear a whining sound that basically decreases as the car slows down (and it's not the transmission or engine obviously)

I personally like the whining noise when i crank the steering wheel...i honestly think your just looking too deeply into this...
