Noob question about Map/Dome Lights

Stupid question, but i'd rather be safe than sorry.

Is it absolutely necessary to disconnect the negative battery terminal when installing the map/dome/license plate LED's?

I know jack shit when it comes to electrical....but ask me to design a highway and i'll be glad to help :chuckle
