View Full Version : PPE Exam
Hey guys [and gals :)]
I was just wondering if anyone on here has written their PPE and have some last minute pointers for me. I've got mine tomorrow and I think I'm ready but could always do with some friendly advice if you've already done it.
If not... then... wish me luck!!!! :bana

What kind of test? Like for workplace safety? I've done one but it was Nursing related.
It's an exam that Engineers need to take before they are granted their professional license.
One of a bunch of hoops that we need to jump through before they give us the nice rubber stamp >_o
we aren't supposed to play with the stamps... but i'm gonna give one right to my forehead... Shhhh!!! don't tell anyone though. they might take my license away!

Ick that sounds like fun.
So what exactly do you have to do? Maybe talking about it will get your confidence up.
Haha.. that's actually one of the most likely questions on the exam.
List 5 of the requirements to qualify.
- You need to have an undergraduate engineering degree from an accredited university in canada.
- need 4 years of experience, one of which must be directly under a licensed engineer.
- must pass the PPE Exam!!! <-- Eeeep!
- canadian citizen
- must be 18 years of age (how you can get your undergrad and 4 years of expereince and less than 18 years old... my hats off to that person)
- must be of good character
the exam will only cover law and ethics. i think i'm good on the law part, but i am prone to take bribes.... not sure i'll pass the ethics portion...
i basically have everything and am short of about 2 1/2 years of experience...
at the end i'll get a piece of paper and a rubber stamp!
Oh yeah, and I hear that nurses really like engineers too...
Not sure if it's true or not though...what do you think? :chuckle

Nursing students love engineer students. We are basically the only two programs in Uni (other than Accounting) that you actually know you'll have a job in the long run.
All in all, Nursing students are whores and engineering ones are the proud recipients. We have no spare time, so might as well brush up on our anatomy homework in the meantime.

haha.. i intended to direct the question to her since she mentioned she is a nurse.

4 years is required regardless of discipline for the P.Eng license. That may have been a change from way back when, but it's been this way for at least the last 10 years.

Haha...... that's so funny! good answer good answer.
I may be a lot of things by association with the title.

but maybe not so much a "proud recipient" I'm still a gentleman. At least I think so.

Internship or Co-op will count towards the 4 years experience... that may be why he was thinking only 3 because it was possible he did internship/co-op

Well that's good. You're one of the few. All I know is the Nurses get invited to the Engineering parties and the Engineers invite the Nurses to their parties. Each program too is predominantly male and female so it just works.

I wrote mine a few years back...
I seem to remember that there are only a few different types of Law questions (tort, equitable estopple (sp?), some thing on contract law) If you read the law book you will be fine.
For ethics they give you the reg. so you can find most of the answers there.... but if you don't know it it will slow you down.
There is always a definition question..like define 5 of the following 8 terms.
my biggest problem was i hadn't written an exam in 3-4 yrs and 3hrs of writing was tiring!
It is not that tough, you will do fine! plus it is pass/fail so 50% is the same as 90%
GL
Did mine in the summer. Was pretty painful to go back to studying and writing exams after 6 years.
The only advice is to do old exams. 90% of the questions in the exams are repeats from old exams (word for word) So find old exams with answers and read them over and you'll be set. Good luck.
Next step is to write the experience report. It's pretty hard to find the motivation to do it. I'll have to get on it eventually.
Oh the sh*t we do to get a rubber stamp...
Ahhhhhhh!!!!
There was one question on the law part that I had no idea what to write... Good thing I think I did well enough to get more than 50% on that section.. haha. I am relatively certain I passed the ethics part no problems.
I'm kind of confused how to write the experience report. I was looking through the PEO website and couldn't really find a template or anything or how the yearly experience submission procedure worked. Maybe I need to look for a contact so that I can email someone to ask....
Hopefully there isn't too much more difficult steps in getting the license. Proving experience is hard too. :(

Wow...PPE...lol...I wrote mine last year, wasn't too bad except for those wonderful cases. I was told 3 years experience though i'm going for my C.E.T cert. along with the tech report. Hope everything went well for you.
The required experience was changed to 4 years in like '98 or '99 i can't remember which.
Before that it was 2 or 3 i think.

Nursing students love engineer students.
Really? Since when did anyone like engineering students? :chuckle
Actually, when DO you see them walking around?
To my knowledge, if one spots a person seemingly lost with blank looks on his face on the streets, it must be an engineering student.
Some say they never see sunlight during the school months, and are blocked out of society under the mountains of work.
This explains why they may look very lost.. as daylights and all had been buried in distant hazy memories..
(Sadly though.... I am one)

That's why Nursing students love Engineers. We both have massive workloads, your program is predominantly male, ours predominantly female, and we both have kickass careers at the end of it.

Apparently the prof expects us to memorize the entire textbook word for word including Appendices.

If you're looking at getting your license in the states, I'd advise to write the California one as it is the the most difficult and it sets the bar for the states (meaning if you can pass it you should be able to pass all other states). I wrote the first half and passed, but man, 8hrs for half of my license, dayum! I write the PPE in April.

I'd be in for the Eng/Nursing party... Downtown TO is always a great place to party :-P
So many memories came back reading this post:pop
Went through the whole process for Quebec and Ontario.
In quebec, it's 2 years. But the process is a tad different.
For Ontario, it's 4 years.
Basically, one can't use the "Engineer" designation unless he meets the following:
- education requirement (bacc degree)
- has demonstrated 4 years of supervised engineering experience (you have to submit your experience record to POE, and it has to be signed by P.Eng.'s)
- has passed the PEO ethic/law exam
- and has met the other requirements, such as citizenship, language, etc.
The fact that one has a ring does not mean that the person is designated as an engineer. Basically, the ring is an indication that one has graduated from an accredited engineering school, which is just the beginning.
One can be brought to court and be fined for the illegal use of the "Engineer" designation. Microsoft Canada lost against l'Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec for the illegal use of the Engineer designation. Remember when everyone from Nortel or Microsoft were calling themselves Program Engineer, Software Engineer, etc.
Once one has successfully met all the above, he receives his P.Eng. designation (license), and stamp.
Stamping a drawing or engineering report means you will be responsible for that work for life. So, that's pretty serious. Mistakes are no longer allowed.
Anyway, good luck with the Exam. All the best.
A long career is ahead of you. All the baby boomers are leaving work, which is just good for us:bana

A word of advice.....you might leave the place thinking "WTF I could have failed it".....do not worry, unless you left most answers blank or wrote in a different language they are just looking to see if you have a general grasp of the material. I left thinking it could have gone either way, problem is they make you stress for like a month to wait for the results......GOOD LUCK!!!
Some actual sound advice:
For Ethics: When in doubt write "he/she has an obligation to the public as paramount and as such should not do....."
For Law: When in doubt, if you don't remember the case exactly, or the name of the case, just describe what you remember (ie. the key facts of the case were..... leave out names if you don't remember them but they just want to see that you remembered the outcome.

Hey man i did write at UofT. I was in room 320 at the front right corner of the room. I usually sit in the front corner because then I can't see anyone during the test. It's a real let down when you don't know the answer to questions and you look around and you see everyone writing their hearts out. This was my seating position for 100% of exams in my undergrad lol

As long as you've applied for your license then you're eligible to write the exam. It's probably best to write it before you've accumulated your experience so that you can submit for your review once the 4 years is up instead of having to wait for the next exam sitting.

if you work directly under the supervision of a P.Eng. then it almost automatically qualifies. I say almost because your boss could be a P.Eng. but you're doing a business job or something. Otherwise, you'd need to justify your experience and how it qualifies as valid experience. You will need to provide references for PEO to check experience as well so don't burn bridges and make sure to keep in contact with superiors or other P.Eng. colleagues so that they can help you verify your experience.
there are 5 (i think) separate categories that experience can fall under. 3 of which are almost always mandatory to be considered as valid experience. application of theory, design, and.... something else i forget them all..

As fini said, they will as long as you're under the supervision of a P.Eng. Also they will only give you a maximum of 12 months credit for any pre-grad experience.

Oh really, only 12 months. I'm asking cause I should be supervised by someone with a P.ENG but the position seems to be very business oriented so I'm not sure if it would qualify.
If you have the time, when PEO sends out those EIT information session seminar sign up emails you should def go to those.
It's very informative.
They cover a lot in terms of experience checklist. What counts, what doesn't, what justification is required, maximums, minimums, etc etc.

Where would I find these seminars? I'm a member of OSPE and a student PEO member but I barely get anything from them.

if you login online on the PEO website (you need your ref. #) you should be able to enter your email address and all that. whenever these seminars take place they will send out an email to you.
or you can get in contact with Margaret who handles that stuff.

I am writing mine in December.
I feel the ethics portion is much harder than the law portion. Mostly because Law is all about definitions while ethics you have to apply principles, etc.
For the people who did the PPE exam and passed it, how much did you study for it? Also did you read the entire textbook? How did you study for it?

if you can't tell what's ethical from reading those questions, you have real problems. lol
for the law part you need to know the actual cases that apply and have to be able to state which case applies to the question.
with the ethics, you just identify the ethical problems and throw the "book" at them.
here's an ethics type question off the top of my head.
An engineering graduate, Johm Smith, who recently was let go from the consulting firm he was employed for 36 months after he graduated, started providing engineering advice to family and friends. After a couple months, he began advertising on a local online classifieds. The add read:
Engineering services cheap! Will beat any price you can find. I am the cheapest, the fastest and better than all the other firms out there. Hire me today and my services the second time you hire me will be free.
sincerely,
John Smith, P.Eng
can you tell what's wrong with that? If you can, you'll be fine.

Well first off he is only an engineering graduate and not a professional engineer so he is violation of the Professional Engineers Act because he is practicing professional engineering without a licence. Second, he is using the P.Eng title so he is also in violation of the Act. There are a couple of violations on code of ethics here but I do not have the paper in front of me to tell you which ones.
My main problem are not the cases. Those are very easy and practical. My main concern are those questions. Especially when it comes to PEO's self-regulation question and the advantages of being a consulting engineer.

you cannot claim to be the best, you cannot offer "discount" engineering. the other stuff you got right, and then you apply the sections of the code that apply, and the disciplinary action is all the same.
just do your reading and you'll be fine. Everyone says it's a joke, I disagree. You still need to know what you're talking about, but with the right reading it'll be no problem for you.

you cannot offer "discount" engineering.
Out of curiosity, why's that? Pricing or cost for consulting/etc, isn't regulated is it?

I don't mean you can't offer reasonable pricing, I mean you can't advertise "buy one get one free" type thing or that you're the cheapest etc etc.
they just don't want engineering associated with being cheap. since in alot of people's minds, cheap is associated with poor service or lack of quality etc. etc. Believe me there are enough firms out there giving bottom dollar services anyway.

That's sort of what I figured.
Yeah, that's a little concerning.

I wish it was regulated actually, then we could avoid those firms undercutting my firm, and giving sub-par services.
which means we could raise our prices, and I can make the money I deserve for the work I do. :flaming

I hear ya, sucks big time. Wish there was some sort of association that gives a numerical or "star" rating for firms based on inspections and reviews and stuff. Like an official rating. Would make finding a decent company a lot easier.

Just a questions regarding the licence...
I do not have my 48 months of engineering experience yet so say if I get it in the next 5-6 years, do I ever have to do the PPE exam again? Is there a limitiation period as to when I need to get everything done by?

As long as your file shows that you have successfully completed the PPE there is no limitation tied to when you complete your 48 months of experience.

Where are you writing the exam? From what I can remember, the Toronto one should be somewhere in the U of T campus (I think). Maybe I'll see you there. :)

There's no definite "deadline," as long as you get your 48 months, although, the trick is having covered the criterion as posted by the PEO. Also, there's a limit to how many times you can take the PPE exam (3 I believe). After 3 tries and no luck, I believe they will close your file and will not allow you to get on with the application... Pretty rough, but hey, just need to study hard and take it seriously. :)

You're better off writing your PPE while you are accumulating your experience. That way, assuming you pass your PPE, you only have to complete the experience review portion. You save a lot of time doing it this way.
If you do it how you say you are going to, there is a lot of wasted time between the end of the 48 months, acceptance of your experience by the review panel, writing the PPE, followed by another 6-8 weeks until the results come in, followed lastly by a complete review of your file.

Took the OSPE course last year and passed the exam with flying colours (around 1hr to complete it, first one in and out). The course is definitely worth it! The company I work for covered my course fees, but it is def worth the $3XX.xx cost. I lent out the notes from the OSPE course to a friend but should be getting them back shortly.
Contact me if you'd like to take a look at the notes, it would give you a good idea on what topics to focus on.

agreed, that course was definitely worth it. I was really busy with work and would not have had the time or motivation to study, so I took the course, and passed the exam no problem.
Up to this day I could not tell you what the PPE books look like, because I've never opened one. lol
sidenote: my company did not cover the cost of the prep course but it was still worth the $283.50 I paid

I took the PPE exam a couple years back myself. Since I hadn't taken an exam in like 5 years, I decided to sign up for a training course as well and went with ExPS (exam prep services). I was gonna do OSPE but decided against it because I didn't think they had anywhere near the same quality/quanitity of material to study from (plus expen$ive) .
I think ExPS.org was like $100-200 but it ended up costing me $90 since they will sell you the exam books new/used and also buy them back off you when you're done. I had online access to 1000's of previous exam questions and a bunch of cool online testing pages for different sections of the exam, plus tons of other analysis. Awesome course with Bob Loree and would highly recommend. Contact me if you want my thoughts on the exam.
