I really want to get an FMIC kit in the spring/summer, but I also want to keep my CAI. I'm leaning more towards CP-e because of the 2.25" piping, and since CP-e makes a CAI I'm assuming it works with any CAI. Does anyone know what FMIC kits will work with a CAI or not?

i believe Cobb's Fmic works with the Cai because they have maps for them..

I've heard from somewhere that there are some fittment issues with Cobb's FMIC fitting with CAI's. Meaning, their FMIC piping rubs and knocks against the CAI tube while shifting and sometimes the shifter weight can actually hit the FMIC tube. I also didn't really want to go with 2.5" tubing. Tubing that large isn't necessary. But I'll add Cobb to the list now, it's price is a lot better than CP-e's.

I noticed, and I think this might be the same for other FMIC's as well, that you have to let the piping "settle" for a couple weeks, then make minor adjustments on how it is run. I had Jimmy do this recently and have had no rubbing issues since. I do agree though it's a good idea to get the Cobb shifter weight since it is a lot smaller than the stocker which takes up way too much room.

And you're right the Cobb is a lot better deal, especially the one I have left from pre-$ meltdown time :)

Just wondering, why would you need a CAI with an intercooler? Won't the air get cooled through the intercooler anyways?

Mazdaspeed 3 Front Mount Intercooler Kit (MS3-FMIC)

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k298/4g63telantra/turboxscooler.jpg

The leading cause of inconsistent horsepower output from your Mazdaspeed 3’s MZR 2.3 DISI powerplant is due to inconsistent air intake temperatures. When you drive your MS3 hard, the tiny stock Top Mount Intercooler quickly becomes heat soaked. Intake temps rise quickly and power output drops off accordingly. Sure, you could replace your stock TMIC with an aftermarket TMIC that is slightly larger than the stock TMIC, but that only delays the inevitable heat soak that comes from having a small intercooler core that is positioned smack on top of your hot engine. So what’s a MS3 owner to do?

Enter the TurboXS Front Mount Intercooler for the 2007 Mazdaspeed 3. With an enormous intercooler core that has 60% more surface area, 164% more volume, and 112% more thermal mass than the stock TMIC, inconsistent power output due to heat soak is a thing of the past. Additionally, on our MS3 peak power increased to 321 whp and peak torque to a ridiculous 345 ft-lbs when we replaced our stock TMIC with our FMIC.
Now you might ask “But doesn’t adding a huge FMIC in place of a TMIC cause more turbo lag and poor throttle response?” Hell, no! Power increases throughout the entire RPM range. Check out the dyno plot to see for yourself.
Others might say “But installing an FMIC is hard and once you do, you can never go back to stock.” Wrong! Our engineers designed the FMIC so that no major cutting is required. Three plastic “tabs” that serve no function do need to be trimmed, but that’s it. Everything you need is included in the kit and everything can be easily uninstalled should you ever feel the need.

The TurboXS MS3-FMIC features include:
• Custom made Bar and Plate Intercooler Core
• Mandrel Bent, Mirror Polished Aluminum Intercooler Pipes
• Reinforced Silicone Hose Couplers
• Stainless Steel T-bolt clamps
• No cutting of the bumper required (some minor plastic tabs do need to be trimmed

it is a good kit but i don't believe it fits with the cpe cai, you have to get theirs and then you're pretty far off the variables used on the off the shelf maps. no doubt its a quality piece, but its different enough that it could complicate your overall package tuning plans
