I have a 2004 mazda 3gt 5 speed and today my car started to shake when I went above 80km I have no idea why it's doing this. Everything else seems normal except when I go above 80km any idea what it could be?

First thing would be to check for snow and/or ice stuck to your rims. I get that every time after a big snowstorm.

tires need to be balanced probably

+1. It can be caused by other things, but 9 times out of 10, when a car shakes on the highway, the tires are not balanced correctly, or have gone 'out of round'.

After yesterdays snowfall I bet 100% its snow in your steelies/rims

and even more likely the case if you are sporting steelies with hubcaps.

And this is the hazard of hubcaps in the winter! The snow gets in, and then when you park it melts a bit from the heat of the brakes, slides to the bottom... and freezes.

(And yeah, I am running hubcaps this year. Still haven't decided yet whether I like them better than the plain steelies or not... they sure aren't my RPM2s!)

this.

my car wasnt braking or driving that great this morning.
ended up being ALOT of snow in the wheel wells, behind the wheels, and engine bay.
i got most of it out, and everything was fine afterwards.

I had the same problem, Mine was snow in the steelies (man they pack snow) , but another thing is if these are snow tires that u put on recently u may need to go over the bolts and re tighten them, they can loosen up

I ended up going to the coin-op and sparyed all over the tires and through the rims the brakes and it worked the shaking stopped and everything seems normal again.

Thank God! I thought that must be it. My steering wheel isn't effected by this vibration so I knew it couldn't be that bad. Just figured it was my 16" stealies that JUST cover the caliper..

Had the same thing happen yesterday. Pull and handbrake U-wee and had a ton of snow shoved into the wheels. Good thing I had a Swiffer duster, it fitted between the spokes perfectly to clear it of snow.

Baymoe - that avatar is good times...

This car was doing the hippy shakes tonight too, I hope its warm tomorrow, I'll spray that snow clear away. W

Hey would giving the inside surface of the alloys a spray of lithium grease help prevent snow and ice build up ?

Since I live in the Caribbean the only time the car shims after 80kph(40-45mph) is because there are worn out outer terminals or bushings. I have also found that steel belted radials and potholes don't have a good love relation, and when you hit a pothole and the steel belt warps inside the tire, sometimes you can't notice it until you drive it past 80kph. If it shims around 35-45kph you need to check the tire balance. I picked this up watching the front end mechanic at where I worked when I was a young chap at a tire store. But the variant about the snow of course cannot be overruled for you guys in the great white North. Good luck, hope a trip to the car wash will fix the problem. Driving in snow is Yay!! Yuk! Me don't like.
