ive seen a DIY on m3f about installing a device that retains the steering wheel contorls for after market decks. has anyone had any experience installing this? or has someone done something similar?

I think you mentioned in another thread you had a Pioneer deck? If so, you need a PAC SWI-PS, http://www.pac-audio.com/products/productsCatagory.asp?mmSearch=Steering%20Wheel%20I nterface#SWI-PS .

What model of HU do you have?

This is your other option if that doesn't work. PAC SWI-X http://www.pac-audio.com/products/productsCatagory.asp?mmSearch=Steering%20Wheel%20I nterface#SWI-X

I really don't recommend the SWIX. I used to use that unit, and had lots of problems, because the IR beam is sensitive to sunlight, etc. My suspicison is the SWI-PS will work on the new Pioneer F Series, it just likely hasn't been updated yet. I would suggest contact PAC and asking. As well, I believe MacGuyver has the same head unit, and has steering wheel controls. PM him, and see what his set up is.

I agree with you on the PAC unit but I was just on Pioneers website and some didn't show they had a wired remote input, which I thought the PAC SWI-PS needed?

You are likely correct Ryan, I hadn't thought it through that carefully.

I did some checking on Avic411.com, a forum dedicated to Pioneer head units. Check out this thread:http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19540&highlight=steering+wheel
This post is directly from PAC
"So everybody knows, we, PAC, have did our best to remedy most of the concerns of the SWI-PS. Unfortunately the preset signal is no longer sent to the wired remote input, so there is no fix for that. As far as the delay, if anybody understands how this part works, it has to recieve and change the input signal to a useable data signal accepted by the Pioneer.Somethings cannot be changed on our end and we do the best we can.

Fo those that are complaining about spending $50 on this part, you are probably not buying form a authorized dealer since this part retails for $89.99.Most of those sales were probably eBay sales in which PAC will not honor any issues or old revisions with those parts.

Also if you read the thread I suggested, it seems there is a new verion either out now or coming out, that should work better.

Its a pain-in-the-ass to install. Better to get it professionally done. Just be advised that in winter time if its colder than -10 outside, then it will take at least 15min to be fully working properly.

I believe i have the SWIX in my 3 for the panasonic deck. wasn't that hard to install. just had to find the right wire. took about 15 mins to install in nice and warm weather. to this day never had any problems with it so far.
