I don't think it was an act of desperation, rather a parody on what actually happened. Apparantly in the actual video for "Single Ladies" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mVEGfH4s5g) one of the dancers is actually a dude because one of them got sick. The choreographer stepped up to the plate. Correct me if I'm wrong - I think its the darker skinned "woman" - I mean man.
