Hi,
I was looking to have a set of RX-8 oems shipped in from the US any ideas on if it is difficult at the border or customs? I checked the Canada Customs website but it doesn't really provide specific information. Someone who has done this in the past would be helpful!
Thanks!

I have and both times from eBay.
First a set of Porsche wheels from Florida without any issues. Seller wrote the value as $200 and I didnt get charged customs.
I had my BBS STI's shipped from Texas. Those I had issues with but it was from the seller. I paid duties on those.
As long as you dont ship with UPS you should be okay. I've had major issues with UPS. Even when I bought a $220 Momo steering wheel for the bf's GTI I ended up paying $60 in BROKERAGE FEES!!!

I purchased a set out of the US in New York i think had them shipped and prepaid for the customs tax but got charged again. So i filled out the claim to get my money back and showed them all the proof that i already paid the customs taxes and am still awaiting their reply. The customs i paid was 80$ on time of purchase and customs charged me another 55$. The tires i received were not the greatest either so unless you know 100% what you are buying i would say its not worth it

Fedex will nail you as well. USPS is the best way.

Patience.
We are in the middle of winter. People are not in a 'selling rims type of mood'. I say wait till spring when people are getting rims and jump on a deal then.

absolutely correct.
Regardless of the deal, it won't be worth it if the seller is shipping via UPS Ground or Fedex Ground.
Express costs a lot more but there are no hidden fees.

Keep in mind that with the dollar where it is, you get nailed about 25% (since your credit card never converts at a prefered rate).
If you can, buy local. :)

how much of a charge are we talking about? because I was thinking of buying a set of tires and rims to replace my 15"s and winters from tirerack. The price i quoted from them with exchange and (what they quote) shipping was about $1700 I tried to do the same package here and it would have come out to about $2500 for the exact same package. is fedex and ups going to charge me $800 in duty on top of what I'm already paying tirerack?

I have bought tires for my truck form tire rack a couple of years ago and they don't charge the duty...who ever brings it to your door will charge you the duty!

Ok so bear with me guys/gals as I try to get this straight. The shipping company is the one that pays the duty on getting it over the border to my house or the shop, where ever I get it shipped to. Now duty as far as I understand (i could be wrong) is based on the value of the item. Now if this is true how could different shipping companies charge me something different?

because the companies charge a service/handling/admin fee on top of duties and taxes.

what shipping companies such as UPS Fedex DHL charge you is actually brokerage fees.. These are i believe fees used to cover the cost of the paper work required to bring the item across the border... On top of this fee you will be looking at taxes + duties depending on value of the item.. Best thing is buy local.. Deals come around... Sorry for formatting issues posting from my E71 lol

UPS, Fedex, DHL etc yes.
Becareful with UPS as they also add BROKERAGE fees on top of the duties they incurred for your purchase.
edit: ^^^ nevermind you answered it above heheheh :)

Thanks for the help everyone, you've answered a lot of my questions and gave me things to think about. One thing no one has answered for me now is if all those processing and brokerage fees will be big enough to offset the $800 dollar difference between buying them here and getting them from the states? lol times like this i wish I knew someone who lived in Buffalo.

There is a mailbox service in Niagra Falls, Ny., check this out: http://www.usaddressinc.com/mailbox.htm . They would charge you a fee to receive the wheels, then you could go over and pick them up. when you cross the border, you would likely just pay taxes.

If it's $800 difference and you have already factored in the exchange rate then the duties won't be that bad. Not even close.

Rent a UPS box (at the UPS store; they are everywhere) they will hold the wheels for you in the back so its really safe. I'd recommend doing that

I've bought wheels & tires from tirerack last year and in the final price they factored in the brokerage fee which was about $60CAD, wheels were delievered to my shop with no extra fees or anything like it. Quick and easy.

yup, unless tire rack changed recently the final price is the final price (in usd of course) no hidden fees, i've saved a whole bunch of money over thepast few years buying from them and other stores in the us.

I concour! I had my last set of wheels for the miata shipped there. Just the savings in shipping will make up for the trip down. Plus no brokerage!

That's also the biggest rip off I've ever seen...
When it comes to RX8 Wheels, or Mazdaspeed wheels, or anything for that matter...
If you're paying more than $100.00 per wheel for a USED OEM wheel... You're dumb.

I got a flawless set of used RX-8 rims for $700 locally. If you think you can find a decent set of RX-8 rims for $400 in Canada you clearly have no idea what your talking about.

$700 was that just for the rims and no tires or worn out tires?
