I was just finishing up the install of the remote starter on my 2006 mazda 3 sedan with the 2.3 L engine and I closed the hood after i had removed the zip tie holding the latch open but before I reatached the release cable.

So my hood is closed with no release lever.

Anybody got any ideas how to reach up there and release it manually?

You should be able to remove, or at least loosen, the front splash shield. Not the one under the engine but in front of that, the piece that closes the gap between the bottom of the bumper and the radiator support. With that removed/loosened you should be able to reach up and pop the latch, maybe with a tool of some kind if it is too tight for arms to reach up there.

I'm just curious. Why did you detach the release cable in the first place?

I removed the release cable as described in the instructions to make passing a couple wires through its grommet in the firewall easier.

Did you have to release it from the latch side though? If it's only released from the handle side, can you get to it somehow from underneath and give it a tug?

The cable has a mechanical stop on it inside the driver’s compartment, so if you want any play in it then you have to disconnect it at the latch. The stop on the cable also blocks the grommet. Removing it from the latch worked well, but I removed my ziptie holding the latch open and forgot to connect the release cable when I returned to the project.
I am going to make an attempt to reach it tonight, if I don’t get it by the weekend Ill swallow my pride and drop it off at a shop.
These cables freeze and break sometimes, how do you get the hood open to fix that?

wow, problem solved. I cant believe how easy that was.

Harbour Rat had it right. I just stuck my arm up there in front of the rad and there was a small hole for the secondary latch that i could stick my finger thourgh. felt around for a sec and then POP!.

I'm so relieved it was a simple matter....
