Go get some FOLEX at home depot (in the carpet section..its a carpet cleaner..it works real good trust me) spray some on the salt spots and let it soak for 10 to 15 mins and then scrub it clean...trust me this stuff works awsome.

After you clean it you should look into getting the weathertech floor liners...you will not get any more salt stains on your carpet!

Only real way to get rid of salt stains is very hot water and an extractor.
Solvents only really spread the stain so that you don't see it anymore.
In the future... get some black bath towels and line the inside of your carpets with it, stuff them up into the plastics.. then place some all weather mats on top.
When they get salty... take them out put them in the wash and then put them back.
Come spring you won't have any salt stains to worry about.

I put newspaper under and inbetween all my winter mats to catch anything the mats don't get (I use 2 mats, a big one at the bottom and a thinner smaller one on top that's easy to remove and empty). Every few weeks I take out the newspaper and toss it in the recycling and lay down some fresh paper.

Been doing this for years and I never get salt stains! It's simple and free since you can get your hands on newspaper pretty easily. Then you can recycle it so everyone wins, even the environment lol.

I have the weathertech floorliners, the rear is ok, the front has a lot of salt stains. I don't find the floorliners work as well in the front as they do in the rears. I would have liked the front driver's side to be a little longer.

yeah, I also notice the back of the front floorliner doesn't sit flush to my carpet, just on the bottom right side. The top left corner of the mat is where most of my salt stains are. Since my interior is beige it looks like crap right now.

Man, that detail thread is amazing! Click and brag for sure! =)

For a DIYer, would you recommend buying an wet/dry extractor to get salt/dirt out of carpet and upholstery? In other words is it possible to get one at Canadian Tire or somewhere else that's affordable?

Sorry for the double post, I can't edit yet. =(
Also what would (anyone) recommend to get dirt and other fibres out of that "fibery" stuff that's in the hatch back carpeting and backside of the rear seat?

Would a vacuum be able to pull that stuff out?

+1 for Folex -

Aunt had someone spill red wine on her off white carpet. When she found the spot the next day , she used Folex, let sit for 10 minutes, blotted and it was totally gone!

I rushed out the next day and bought 2 bottles. AWESOME!

How-to: Clean Interior Carpet After A SALTY Winter (http://forum.torontomazda6.com/viewtopic.php?t=2183)

time: 20min per foot well/area

Materials & tools
Shop Dry/Wet Vacuum
Plastic Bristal Brush
Carpet Cleaner
Boiling Water (400-500mL per foot well)
Thermos
Steamer (optional)

Tired of scrubbing and scurbbing and scurbbing that carpet after a salty winter? even w/ carpet cleaners, they are a PITA to get those
crystalized salt thats on your carpet (eventhough you have winter mats). Detailers charges from $30 and up for carpet cleaning.....

After visiting one detailer 3 years ago, i've learnt how to do it myself now, and have been doin' it ever since....

Here are some examples on what it looks like w/ the Mazdaspeed6 Floor mats + Costco Michelin Rubber Winter mat

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4148/resizeofdsc01151.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6599/resizeofdsc01152.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3195/resizeofdsc01153.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4139/resizeofdsc01154z.jpg

roughly vacuum all leaves and crap on the carpet first

Spray all area (salt that's already crystalized/solid) w/ Carpet cleaner
and let it soak for 20minute to loosen the dirt

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5188/resizeofdsc01156v.jpg

Work in small area first, take your time! say one square feet area.
pour boiling water out of the thermos, and let it soak and puddle up to 5-8mm deep...then scrub scrub scurb for 30sec-1min....and suck up majority of the
dirty water/dirt w/ a wet/dry vacuum!

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1311/resizeofdsc01157m.jpg

Use a steamer if it's in a very tight area where it's hard to reach,
perimeter of the gas door opener, void area underneath the fuse cover.
(using the steamer in the general carpet area will not work as effective, cuz steam gets evaporated too quickly....unless you have a industrial steamer)

So here you can see when a small area is cleaned....

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5290/resizeofdsc01159n.jpg

now continue and it'll take you about 20min to do one foot well/area...
here is what it looks like after .....

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2913/resizeofdsc01161g.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8667/resizeofdsc01162i.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4402/resizeofdsc01163q.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3919/resizeofdsc01164.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2978/resizeofdsc01165.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5563/resizeofdsc01166.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8435/resizeofdsc01167.jpg

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2061/resizeofdsc01168.jpg

I've rolled my car outside and parked on the driveway, so that
my misty carpet will dry under the sun for the an hour or two....
(since my wet/dry vac cannot suck up 100% of the water out of the carpet)
now i've saved you +$30....enjoy and have fun!

i assume no responsibility or liability for this information. use at your own risk! Nevertheless, i will gladly to help and answer as much question as i can.
