View Full Version : Transmission would not shift into higher gears

My car is 5 years old and it has been problem free.

Today it just would not shift into 3rd (or higher). Mine is an automatic and when it goes into 3rd, engine revs up like it has gone into neutral. If I keep driving it would go into 4th (as shown on the dash), and then the "AT" light would come on.

I had to drive with the manual mode and lock it up in 2nd gear. At least I can drive it around in the city, still. Also had problem putting it in reverse, had to try a few times and wait for a few seconds before it would go into reverse gear.

Does anyone with an AT had similar problem before?

BTW Does anyone know about Westowne's drop-off policy? I wanna drive the car down on Sunday and leave it there, then call them and let them know about the problem on Monday. I wouldn't have time to take the car down for the rest of the week...

So I dropped the car off on Sunday.

Westowne was able to duplicate the problem. On Monday they told me I probably need a new transmission, and they were waiting for Mazda's adjuster to check the car and do the final approval before they can go ahead and order a transmission.

Tuesday the Mazda technician came, test drove the car.... "It drives beautifully" and no problem at all :loco They have no idea what the problem might be. So I picked the car up after work.... It drives great!

I dunno... WEIRD

is the car still under warranty-power train?
remember if you need a new tranny you will not get a new one you will get a rebuild...

Yea I have extended warranty to 120,000.

I figured it would be a rebuild, but still it's gonna cost them thousands.

The only mystery is the car is driving fine now.

I had a similiar problem way back in november 2008 but mine didn't trigger the AT light. Anyways, if I took off from a stop light slowly, the tranny shift from 1 to 2 correctly. However, if I took off in a sporty manner (5000RPM or higher shift point), the tranny would float in neutral before shifting into 2nd. :whoa The symptom deos not occur in manual mode

So, knowing that the dealer is closed on the weekend, I took to my dealer right away (it was Friday 4PM:) ) and explain it to my advisor. Then the service manager (also the dealership's owner) went with me for a test drive.

He replicated the problem and asked me if I had modified something under the hood. I said yes my MS CAI was installed in May 2008. He said ok and then he drove hard (sometimes doing WOT) while merging on the freeway. Then after that, we drove to a gas station and he asked me to switch back into the driver seat and drive it normally to see if my problem is solved.

Amazingly, it did.:whoa No more tranny float when going from 1 to 2 @ 5000RPM or higher:chuckle He said that by babying the car since your install, you didn't gave a chance for the engine (the MAF I suppose) to learn its new high-end power mapping. (I guess I'll have to drive it a little harder! lol)

Before leaving the dealership, he also said that he would look up whith a mecanic to see if I had any tranny re-flashing to be done since my car is built in November 2005 as a 2006 model. Just before the dealer closes for the weekend, my advisor said that the tranny module has been reflashed under warranty. I got my car back and it works #1

Btw, our automatic tranny the kind that learns the driver's shift patterns(Adaptative)?

Hi Nova, I was told that the auto tranny will learn your driving pattern. it is pretty cool aye?

Yup considering that it was not mentioned in the brochure and online neither. :)

But I haven't changed anything under the hood.

It would float in neutral in 3rd... If I let off the gas and let the rpm drops, it would go into 4th on the display (but still neutral). If I rev it up in 4th the "AT" light comes on.

Whatever it was the car drives normal now. I hope the problem is gone forever...

isn't adaptive transmission pretty standard?

its annoying that it'll downshift from 5th to 3rd, if I floor it in tiptronic mode at 100km/h
