View Full Version : Help, key in, lights come on, but it doesn't start.
Today i drove th ecar everything was fine went home had to go out again and it woulnd't start ,all the lights ,radio came on but the engine wouldn't turn over not even a sound .
So i had it towed to Dufferin Mazda ,when i got there i put the key in the ignition and it started right away .
They did a diagnostic but couldn't find the problem , so they said it could be the starter motor , but i don't think so i think it has something to do with the electrictal ........
BTW it's an 05 GS 5speed
Any comments or suggestions.............

Probably because of the thread title..
People open it expecting one thing and go... meh... next thread.
Title changed.
Lesson to those who start a thread.. make your title mor accurate.

Sorry for the title but when i started the thread i was a little pissed off ,that i had spend $60 for towing and another $60 for a stupid diagnostic that didn't show anything ........
The only thing i got from the mazda tech is that it might be the stater .
I just don't want to spend $on a starter and then it will be something else .

Last winter I had the same thing happen to me. I moved the transmission shifter around and the car started. I drove it to the dealers and they said that the transmission selector pivot was seized so they cleaned it up and lubed it and it was ok until a few nights ago. I was visiting a neighbour a few blocks away and when I was ready to drive home, the car would'nt start. I tried moving the shifter around again but the car would not start. I left it on the street all night and the next day it started up right away and it's been ok since. So I don't know if its the pivot again or a new starting problem.
I have had a lot of other problems with this car including the A/C compressor having to be replaced at my expense. the car only has 67000 kms.
I'ts my first and last mazda. Let me know if you get your starting problem resolved.

Hey,
Might sound like your ignition wires that connect to your starter. Might be the problem. Happened to my 95' Lude when I had it. I filled up on gas, paid and when I got into my car everything would turn on when I cranked the key then when I let it return to "idle" position everything would shut off.
I was told it was my starter too when I went to Canadian Tire to get it checked out, $100 for nothing T_T plus $50 towing.
Anyways good luck on that. Hopefully this helps.

Two things come to mind.
1st, it could be your key - that chip that tells the ECU that it's your key and not a screwdriver in the ignition. Next time try your spare key and see if that works.
2nd, Do you start in Neutral or with the clutch in? There are switches on both and one of them needs to be activated to start. Try putting the clutch in and have the stick in neutral when you try to start the car. My '06 had the neutral position switch changed under warranty (although that one threw an engine light).

At the time i did try both keys ,and i always leave my car in neutral and i always step on the clutch to start the car.
It never happened since that (knock on wood) that iti wont happen again..
Thanks for the input......
If i get it fixed i'll post up the reason...................

As noted, check your clutch switch and the wires going to it, once in a while they go faulty and/or intermittent.

I had the same problem a month ago, brought it to the dealership after starting it on the compression. Once at the dealership, tried to start it again and same symptoms. I Left the car there and they called me the next day saying everything was fine with my car and that they did not have to fix anything. While I was on the phone, the tech was looking at his TSB listings and he found one for frozen starter relay which he changed. I have not had the problem since(knock on wood).
Let me know if you need more details and I will call my dealership to find out the TSB #.
