Now that ground hogs day is upon us I was begining to wonder when people are considering changing back to their summer setup, and what that will be.
For myself I plan on getting my summer set up by the end of March break, assuming I get them from the store in time.

I always do it the first week of April :)
I put down May 24 but it all depends on the weather. I don't change until we get consistent weather above 7'C at night. Summer tires aren't recommended to be used at temperatures under 7. So to get the best performance and keep salt off my rims, I wait until its generall nice and warm.
Another option with rims is to wait until its warm and rain has washed all the salt and snow off the roads.

I believe one of the factors that make winter tires more useful than summer tires is the fact that the rubber compound is softer, and can grip the road easier. So once the temperature is warm enough and the summer tires are effective again, I generally make the switch then. I would say when the temperature is consistently around 5-7 degrees C.

I think most would agree that when the weather is steady above 0C (around 10C or so), then that's when they'll put thier summer setup on.
I voted for at least May24, only because there was no option between that and 1st week of April. I'm actually aiming for the middle of May. If you recall, the last snow fall last year occurred in the first week of May....

Changed my tires over yesterday. Just put my stock proxes and factory 16" rims back on. So, there "all" seasons. Did it early cause I am driving to Flordia next week. Did not want to drive 4500 kms on my Blizzaks. Feels good to have my tires back on. Even though they are nothing fancy.

My general rule is winters are on by Hallowe'en and off by Easter (er... an April Easter... not those early March ones) and you're usually safe... but it really depends on the weather. I don't take them off until we are consistently getting over +7 C temperatures.
So while I chose the first week of April, it will probably be later... though who knows :-)

1. When there has been enough rain to wash the salt and sand off the roads. Nice wheels...don't want to get covered in crap.
2. When temperatures are warm enough that the tires aren't rocks. Generally for Summers/All seasons this is said to be about 7*C. I'll take 5*C if the salt is washed away though.
3. Going by a date is useless, because you have no idea what weather will come afterwards.

If you are putting on all seasons I think you'll be safe, even if we get some more snow it shouldn't be any heavy accumulations, and your all seasons should be able to handle it. If you were putting on pure summer tires then I'd wait until it gets a little bit more consistent temperature wise

We all know that March comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion.
4 years ago, we (Prince Edward County) had a snow day on April 4th for crying out loud!
Besides, I don't want to sandblast my new rims, so I'll wait for that rainfall that really cleans the roads. That one warm April shower that smells like dust.

Just keep in mind if you get a winter tire credit from your insurance company, and you get in an accident between now and April 1st... they can deny you coverage.
froggy
03-10-2010, 10:37 AM
I think he's saying that if your insurance gives you a discount for having winter tires on, part of the deal is that you have them on until April 1st otherwise you are not following the "contract" hence they will not cover your accident?
Are you sure? I've not read through my entire insurance agreement to see if it actually states dates like that.
So say today it's +6°C and someone gets into an accident but because they have the winter tire discount and they have their all season/summer tires on their insurance company will deny the claim.
I would totally understand if the agreement actually states you must have winter tires on between specific dates but I don’t see how that can be true if it’s not actually in the document.

you would have to check with either your insurance broker/company what the timeline or the policy is for qualifing for the winter tire discount and what it entails. If you call them up and say well looking at the long term forecast it appears that it is safe for me to put on my summer setup and they agree and fax over something to sign that coroborates that then it should be fine. Or they may not deny you coverage but they might ask to be reimbursed for the discount that you would have recieved because you had winter tires.

I just called my mechanic where I store my summers. I'm always afraid of getting caught in a snow storm in March/April. But since I'm from Newfoundland - I guess it's understandable. Then prep the 18's in time for May

Remember people, summers operate at a higher temperature. It's fricking cold this week and next.
especially if your summers are "summer Only" If you're running all seasons then you should be ok for times like this. I'm running pure summers so i'm not going to switch for a while. weather like this though does make me consider getting a 3rd set of rims and tires mounted with all seasons for march/april and october/november.
Oh an btw good job on resurecting this thread from the dead! we need to make a "back from the dead" emoticon

+1. I almost changed them yesterday when I was in for an oil change and brake check. Glad I didn't. The driver for Mazda kept saying that the best time is the middle of April. But I can't wait that long. March 30th.
I'm picking up my new Sport GS Friday and the dealer asked me which set I wanted put on. I went with summer....

Typically I like to wait for two things to happen;

Over the last couple of years it's usually been the end or april until those two things happen.

Not sure where you live in kitchener, but kitchener is 10x better than the GTA when it comes to roads. I've yet to a pothole, so not sure where your coming from.

I don't use my stock jack.. I got 2 jacks at home...
The reason why it took me so long is cause I check my brakes make sure their good and I also Spary rust check all inside the wheels wells and suspension.

Same wax I use on the car body. Meguiar's NXT2.0 Tech Wax twice a year (spring and fall) and then I use the Ice wax/detailer spray as a quick detailer throughout the summer.
Looking good though :thumbsup
