I was wondering whats the average cost to swap a set of tires - have a new set of tires on rims to put on. I'm in Markham, and hoping to deal locally.

Mount & balance? Cost $200 at Crappy Tire if you didn't buy the new ones there.

You would have to be a fool to pay that!

$20 for each tire should be reasonable to have them mounted on the rims and balanced. don't pay over $100. you can try calling Andy at Speedtech 416-293-6887, I asked him before about swapping 2 sets of tires (8 pcs rims, 8 tires) I think he asked for $100, so in your case should be less than that.

200 is a lot to pay. I've been given quotes around $50.

Well i think i worded the question wrong, I have a set of rims with tires on them on my car. I have another set of rims with tires on them. I just need to take the old rims off, and put the new rims on. No mounting of tires needed. I wasn't expecting $20/tire for that :S

DIY.....of course. If you don't have problem jacking the car to change a spare tire, then you shouldn't have problem doing three other corners.

+1 you could easily do it yourself, just like changing to a donut tire.. If you have prokits, then you could actually change one side at ones, since both wheels would lift off the ground

I go to Steelecase Tires'n'Mags (187 Steelecase Rd West) Just NorthWest of Steeles & Woodbine.

They sell tires & swap them all day. I believe I paid $30. Bring cash, it's cheaper (no balancing)

I think you will find most shops including mazda dealers will charge 20$ for the set to swap tires and wheels if they are already mounted.

$200? Whoaaa. Thats so wrong. Grrr, Canadian Tire sucks man. I feel really bad for the ppl who spend their money their and are actually getting ripped off. Its not even real mechanics. Just some 16year old getting co-op hrs really, or getting minimum wage and not giving a fawk bout someones ride. Pisses me off man

Not too sure where he got his info from, I used to "tire break" at CT when I was in college. $15 per wheel was the charge then. I don't see the price spiking that much since I was there! Its corprate governed, they can't set their own prices like that . (regions may vary for hourly rates, but within a few $$ of each other)

The one in the trunk might not, but you could get a floor jack from a parts store I've seen them on sale for as little as $50, or you could buy a ramp, drive it up and then you'd have space for the normal jack.

That's what they charged my Mom in October. I might have to look into that.

Just buy the $45 jack and jack stand combo from Canadian tire if you don't have one... then you can change your own tires as much as you want.

Where did you get that from? She still has the receipt. I'd love to go in there and ask the manager what happened.

Only if what your saying is true and they took advantage of her.

Unless I'm missing something were talking about mounting and balancing tires on rims. Not just swapping out winter setups for summer setups which you can do with the jack that comes with your car.

Nope, just swapping the rims.

Well then... Ignore my post... it sounded like he was just taking his tires off and putting new ones on instead of putting new rims on the current set of tires.

Yup.
He doesn't need any tires mounted, or balanced. Just the current rims taken off, and the new ones put on.

Although lots of DIY was posted up, there is a fair bit that goes into swapping the wheels, that even some shops won't do.

1. Remove the wheels
2. Clean off the mating surfaces on both the wheels and the rotors/hub.
-Any kind of rust or corrosion can be hell to pay later on. Build up of said items can cause your wheels to get stuck on the hubs, requiring oversided sledge hammers and a few curses.
-Can also cause wheel vibration particularly at highway speeds.
3. Use something like antiseize on the mating surfaces/hub.
4. Reinstall wheels.
5. Torque to proper specification using a Torquewrench.

If you dont have a torque wrench, or any jack stands, don't bother attempting this.

But $30 ~ $40 should be all that you need to pay a shop to do this.
