I'm planning to buy HID's for my 3 and was wondering how to pick the right HID's. i was reading about them and found Bixenon (telescopic)... my question is, wtf is that? ok i know you have to pick the colour of the HID and i was wondering what everyone thinks the best colour is to match my LED eyebrows. and with Watts to go 35w or 55w? any regrets for people who have either one? also to trust the ones on ebay?

Bixenon are designed for cars with hi/lo beams in one bulb. Our cars have individual hi and low beam bulbs.
Also no need to go with 55W unless u plan to blind everyone coming at you. Since the LED are a pure white, go with 4300K or 5000K.
6000K will be white but will have a hint of blue to it.
Why buy off ebay when there are kits available here on the forum? If you want to go cheap, look on kijiji or craiglist and you can get a kit locally for under $125

I was in the same boat you were in not too long ago. I researched HID's till the death through the various forums and friend's opinions. In terms of color/ temperature, I found that most people went with 6000k or 8000k for the night (I went with 6000k). I didn't bother installing HID's for my day running lights.

As for the brand, I went with some no name stuff... I know that alot of people will say to stay away from the one's made in China, but the majority of HID kits are produced there anyways.

not all the kits that are made in china are bad..i paid $120 for my kit and its still going strong. no loss of brightness although when my bass hits the H.I.D's flicker a little bit but that's it

gabbygenier
02-24-2009, 10:33 PM
ya they need a certain amount of voltage to operate. ive heard of some ppl putting capacitors across them to keep a bit of charge. also some ppl say its bad when u turn on ur car and they flicker due to low voltage.

and also not all the kits are bad. id just stay away from the ones that are less then 100 haha.

The capacitors are installed if you plan to hook up the HID kit to your stock wiring.
This will allow you to continue using the DRL feature on our car which generally use less of a draw which = flickering on aftermarket HID's.

Most people use the battery harness to hook up the HD kit to the battery and do the indie fog mod.

with 10K HID's you are asking for tickets and general police harassment.

technically, any aftermarket HID kit is illegal, but its so easy to fight it, that most cops dont even bother.

also, i found a set of Apexcone's online for $60, plus shipping. DEAL!

Did you know that black light has kelvin temp of 12k .. Not that its just asking for trouble, but You wouldnt be able to see anything in front of you..
The higher lumens then less output = no light. Suggested lumens is 4300k for the max/best output anything more is less light.

you can just says it's OEM.
but if you have blue hid's, your pretty much SOL (shit outta luck)
same with if you have halogen housings... (like the douche in the f150 tailgating me earlier. thanks *******!)

Darkfrosty7
03-05-2009, 01:35 AM
SOL? and im pretty sure they can bust you for colours, because some colours are reserved for different purposes, say... blue is snow removal etc.

ok you can have 10 k lights i know people who got them am getting my 10 ks tomorow you can have them if you point the lights down a little bit so its not all the way up blinding people your okay, but i guess as you start to go above 10k then its trouble i called an auto shop he has 10 k too and they install lots of 10k lights and no one got stoped yet or anything all you got to do is point the head lights down a bit and your okay but 12 k and so on your goin to get pulled over with.

dentinger
03-05-2009, 01:13 PM
but why would you want 10,000k?
its going to blue, and the light output is going to be garbage.

skunk2
03-05-2009, 01:35 PM
aiming your lights down reduces the distance you are lighting up at night...wouldn't you want to see more than 4 feet in front of your car? if blue output is the only goal, save your money and just stick with the $10 dollar H7's with a blue tint on them.

From experience I can say definitely buy from a Canadian vendor if possible. The prices from the US may look good but by the time you pay shipping + extra shipping to Canada + exchange + double-dip GST and PST + customs/handling you end up paying at least as much as if you had just paid the supposedly higher price from a Canadian vendor.

ya it's a medium , keep in mind not all kits give the same hint of colour. Example , gizzmo_jr and I have 6000k and mine are more blue. Id go for 6000k for visibility , and 8000k if you want looks . 10k is asking for trouble
