215/45/R17's on Stock 17 Rims

Looking to put 215/45/R17's on the stock 17" GT rims.

Do-able? Bad idea? Positive/negative effects?

I have that set up with Pirelle Nero on...definitely firmer/harder ride and a bit more gas consumption (very minor) but the cornering is much tighter.

PS. the Pirelle are good but a bit noisy. Next summer tires for me will be Michelin Sport A/S. I like them on my wife's car.

No it will not...its the same height as stock

Stock is 205/50/17

The size he wants to put is 215/45/17

Same height as stock....so why would it throw his speedo off???

Not quite, the 215/45R 17 will have an overall diameter of 24.6". The stock 205/50R17 have a diameter of 25.1".

In particular, I am concerned with the difference in width. I've read/heard that the minimum rim width for 215's is 7.0"; any problem with that?

Will be ~1.8% off. When speedo says 60 you will be doing 58.9. Not enough to be a big problem, but will be there.

I'm running 215/50R17s on mine (came with them), and it works fine. No scrubs and barely off on the speedo... Yours is better though, keep you under what you think you are doing! Mine puts me over... (60 showing, actually doing 60.9)

i ran 225/45r17s for the longest time then tried out 235/45r17 looked amazing but it was rubbing because the profile was to high. so i went back to 205/5017s in the front and 225/45r17 in the rear. the sold them for 18s hehehe

I had 215/45/17 with Federals. They worked great. I had no idea there might be an issue until I read this thread.

225/45/17 is closer to stock overall diameter.

but you also gotta remember too, overall size varies from brands/models of tires too.

225 is fairly wide to squeeze onto a stock sized, 6.5" rim.

Without lowering your car, do you think these tires 215/45/17 will make the gap alot bigger and look stupid, or wont be a big difference look wise? what do you think?

The rule of thumb is if the overall difference is within +/-3% then you would be OK... So since this is <2% you are OK... 215 is probably as wide as you should go on 6.5" rim...

Not to be a Thread Stealer... but will 225/45/17 fit on the 2009 stock rim?

That's a bit too wide. 225's are generally recommended for no less than a 7" rim, stock in only 6.5".

I'd stick with a 215 at most.
