View Full Version : Not quite sure if its electrical or engine

Driving normally, came to a stop light... went to accelerate and the ABS light, parking brake light, power steering light and check engine light all come on. Stopped the car, turned it off, turned it back on and it worked fine. This happened one other time before.

Fastforward a couple hours, driving home, same thing happens but I'm driving at a constant 90km/h. This time the lights on the stereo go out, spedometer and RPM guages drop to 0. Pulled over to see if I could turn it off and turn it back on. Starts fine, no warning lights, so I start to go on my way..... as soon as I put it in gear the headlights flash off and I notice I'm stuck in 3rd gear(4 speed auto with manual option) and all the warning lights come back on. Somehow only the power steering light and ABS light were on after trying to restart the car at one point so I made it home(was only 5km from home anyways). Weird thing is all electronics worked, except I couldn't close my sunroof.

Little background info, had to replace the serpentine belt a few months back because of a snow buildup that knocked the belt off(warning lights came on, no power steering yadda yadda..). Did a little looking around, and all the belts are still there so my friend and I think that it might possibly be the alternator. Also I've noticed when there is heavy snowfall(roughly 6 inches on the roads) and I hit a drift, my lights will flicker a bit, but will go back to normal shortly after. I know for a fact that I am missing some guarding from beneath that I am going to get replaced this spring when I get my summer tires put back on.

Wondering if anyone had any suggestions/input before I take it in, because if it is a relatively easy fix I'd rather do it on my own.

Electrical. Check the alternator and battery connections, including ground straps.

UPDATE:

Alternator failed, power steering pump as well because of the alternator.

Hopefully that is all as it is in the shop right now
