Got check engine light about a week ago, the car only has 28000km. Everything runs great. But still would like to get this checked out. Has anyone out there bought a obd2 reader, and which one would they recommend. I saw on ebay some for 60 bucks, Any suggestions?

I has a CEL and it was due to one of the sensors. Covered under warranty.

I had one because of the gas cap. Go to Street Performance and have the code pulled. Jimmy charges a very reasonable price for this. Otherwise, I would suggest investing in a decent reader, which is pricey.

I got a cel today. I was driving and heard a pop noise and shortly after when i parked my car and started it again the cel was on. It remained on until just recently and went off. Gonna get it checked out at dealer

If your car has 28k on it, im pretty sure you car is still within 3 years right? if so take it to the dealer, its free

Thanks for the offer, but I'm located in Winnipeg. Should I just clear it by disconnecting the battery and I read someone else by pumping the brakes?

first thing to check is make sure your gas cap is properly tightened. it's probably the single most common cause of a check-engine light. if it's properly tightened, you can trying turning the car off and back on..if you still get it, it would probably be worthwhile to get it scanned.

Usually, CEL goes out after restarting. Enought to switch off the engine,to wait
10-20 seconds and restart again. It's like, you have a constant problem. To avoid a big troubles, I'd recommend you to check the engine oil level first, and to read the error codes.

If you only have 28,000kms take it in to the dealership for warranty.

Otherwise, the cheap OBD code readers work fine to pull the code and clear it.
The difference between my $38 code reader and a shops $2000 code reader is:
$38
Pulls code number only.
Clears code.

$2000
Pulls code, provides description of issue. Will often have tech notes to accompany issue. Previous mechanics notes of what caused the issue, where to look, etc.

For $38, you get peace of mind knowing it's not internal failure, and something along the lines of a gas cap.

Go onto ebay and grab your self an "OBD 2 Code Reader"
I got one for $30.00, and I have used it about 50 times in the last 2-3 years.

My big mistake was telling my friends and family I bought one, every couple of months someone is calling me to read/erase a code that popped up on their car.

Great little tools.

Which one did you get? I saw a u380 for $40.00, and will all obd2 readers work.
