For any of you interested in an alternative location for Powder-coating your rims, here is the info:

Byers-Busch & Jet Kote
1300 Fewster Dr.
905-625-4334

Near Dixie & Eglinton

I paid $260 for all 4 rims. You have to remove the rubber first. They chemically strip the rims to remove they original powder-coating. They powder-coat everything there. From bike frames to industrial products.

I did this in 05 so I'm not 100% sure if they still do this.

My how times have changed since 05!

I called them and was quoted $150/rim for chemical strip and powdercoat, WITHOUT clear coat. This was for a gunmetal type finish. He said pricing may be a bit less per rim if it were a gloss black finish, but not much less. I like the idea of chemically stripping the rim instead of sandblasting it, but the price difference is just too much. Damn inflation!!! LOL!

Wow, that is crazy. That guy was either hosing you or maybe the price did change. I spoke to an older women back then. She may not be there any longer. She charged me $260/4 for Gloss Black.

Curious, why would you think the chemical strip is better? When you sandblast, you create a pourous surface that the paint dust sits and adheres to. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin."

I know both chemical strip/prep and or sandblasting are the two methods for prp and I'm sure both have pros and cons.

After sandblasting, there will be more of a porous surface of course, and after powder coating how smooth will the surface be? I'm just curious, thats all. Anyone have pics?

There will not be any rough spots. I will be smooth as a baby's bottom. (Unless you had major curb rash our damaged wheels to start with).

Go back and look at some of the pics posted the threads. Yes it looks aweful all sandblasted but the powder coat settles in and forms a smooth skin. The melting of the powder adheres to the rough surface.

Before and after pics posted by another member. I have editted out the vendor info to avoid thread jacking, but this gives an idea of what sandblasting can do to fix minor blemishes and demonstrates the finish of the powdercoat after.

Rim one had this small chip. The sandblasting removed it.

Rim two had this smaller chip. It was also removed by sandblasting.

Rim one also had this curb rash. It is barely visible now. It's under the clear coat and actually smooth to the touch. You wouldn't see it if I didn't point it out.

Rim three had two spots of curb rash. After sandblasting the first spot is gone and the second is now barely visible.

Hey, if the work was done good, with a smooth finish, nice. I didn't have any blemishes or dents on my rims before they were they were chemically stripped and powder coated. If both processes worked out, regarding chemical & sand blast stripping, then so be it.
