Is the 94,000km schedule service worth doing at the dealership? What's involved in the service and what's the cost? Thanks in advance!

caliper service and coolant change are due @ 96000km. Service is somewhere between $250.00-$300.00 taxes inc.

The biggest part of that service is caliper service from what I recall. My '3 is due for that service here shortly as well.
That's true but don't forget the coolant flush, if you don't have the FL22 coolant.

crap i have to do this too, but i dont see how it's necessary as my calipers are fine. can i "opt out" and just get the regular oil change?? or will they refuse to do any service unless this is done??
if that's the case, i wont go to mazda... just start doing it myself as i know my car better than they do half the time anyways :)
also, i just got my rotors machined and such at 60K?? why would the calipers need anything so soon?? kinda makes no sense to me, this should be more like a 120K servicing to do calipers... i never did ANYTHING to my stock (OEM) Accord brakes other than change pads and owned it from 115K-250K!

You can "opt" out of anything you want. You are the customer and we can only advise you what to do. The only time a dealership has the any say in the matter is when it comes to safety. So if the brakes were not functional at all, the dealership may be liable unless you have the brakes fixed or tow the vehicle out. I think in two and a half years we may have seen 1 or 2 vehicles like that.
Some people never maintain their house and they never had to repair anything before they sold it. However, statistics demonstrate that is not likely. The repair is always more than the maintenance. Some people don't mind taking a chance, others would much rather be safe than sorry.
The caliper service (which is once/year or 24,000km) involves inspecting the calipers and lubricating the sliders/rails and checking the pins. If you don't lubricate them, there is a good possibility that they will get dry and stick, causing your brakes and rotors to become damaged (and it may damage the calipers as well). To put that in perspective, a 24,000km service is approx. $200 and includes a tire rotation, oil service, brake service, etc. To replace a set of brake pads and rotors (You have to replace them in pairs) might be $400+++ (if you need to replace the caliper as well, add more $$$).
This question has been asked before, and you can check out the thread at

If you decide not to read the above thread, let me leave you with one VERY IMPORTANT piece of advice. If you choose to get your car serviced somewhere other than a Mazda Dealer, please keep all of your receipts. If there is a warranty issue, Mazda Canada can look at the dealers records. If there are no records because you serviced elsewhere, just make sure you have the receipts available (it's still valid maintenance).

PS. I'll try to get the cost and what's in the 96k service for you tomorrow morning and post it here.

^^ Thanks Jason!
I talked to Burlington Mazda and they won't even do my servicing unless i get the full 96K maintenance required. However, my plan is to swap out the brakes and possibly calipers as well this summer and like i said "they are fine" so i will be calling you shortly for regular service. Worst case scenario, i do my 96K full service at 104K, which is also a strong possibility and wont cause long-term damage :)

This thread just reminded me of my own maintenance story...
I used to own a CRX (Many years before the Mazda dealership) and I was supposed to swap out the timing belt at 100,000km. I didn't do it at the time, figuring that it wasn't important at the time. Well at 105,000km on my way back to Toronto on December 25, I found myself on the side of the QEW trying to get my car towed into any dealership. Turns out, skipping that maintenance cost me $2,000+ (and this was over 10 years ago). Completely changed my perspective on maintenance. Unfortunately we get several people a month who find themselves in those circumstances and find out like I did...

Pretty old thread, but just wondering if anyone has deducted brake maintenance from their 96k servicing? My brakes are new so it won't be necessary.
So far I've been quoted $200 for the full service, and $120 without brake service. Still seems like quite a lot :\

What were they offering to do for the $120? If your not getting the brake service done, whats left is the oil/filter & coolant change>this is according to the schedule2 in the owner's manual.

Yeah... so that's still pretty expensive huh? I already got the filter changed so it should be even less than that... don't they check belts n stuff though? All that would be left is coolant change? Might as well get my dad to do that for free jeez....

Ash I don't think they would have given you the coolant change at that price ($120), along with the oil change that's why I asked what were they going to do for $120....Your dad's a licensed mechanic just get him to do everything including oil/filter changes, aslong as it's convenient I mean. You will save loads of cash! :)
Absolutely no reason to use the dealer, just remember to keep receipts aslong as your warranty is still active.

ahh sorry I'm confused!!! haha... why, is $120 cheap for a coolant + oil change? How much do coolant changes normally go for?
It's hard for my dad to do this kind of work, his boss is a dink and doesn't let him use the shop for personal use :whoa Plus all the way in barrieeee ughhhh... I think I'm just more worried about belts n stuff... I think I'm hearing a faint squealy sound when I start the car on cold mornings now.

Your dad's boss really is a DINK lol (haven't heard that term in a while :chuckle), never heard of a garage that didn't let their own workers perform work on their or their families vehicles...As for price; Actually if they charge the normal $79.95 for the flush and $30+ for the oil/filter change that sounds about right (I got alittle confused there too lol), plus they should inspect all levels and belts and lube all hinges too. :)
Sooo it sounds about right!
