View Full Version : Odometer rollback
Is it possible for a dealer to rollback the odometer and sell a demo as a new car, undetected ?
About five years ago, someone told me of a wrongful dismissal case where ex-employee(s) alleged odometer rollback by a dealer. Apparently, the dealer settled the case out of courts.

possible yes, anything is possible. Is it ethical? no it is not.
I dont think dealers will do it tho because if i can recall, it is a federal offense. It is against the law to do so. Its not worth it in the end. So i dont think large mazda dealers or any other dealers will do it.
I cant say the same for smaller independent dealers or private sales tho

It is 100% illegal for them to do this, especially without telling you.
It's possible if you can get a hold of some kind of rouge underground program to hack into the on-board CPU to do the change. I believe reputable new or used car dealers will not risk their reputations (and legal repercussions) to do this kind of change, but shady fly by night used car dealers may. I also recall watching a TV report about the electronic odo tempering cases a few years back.
The bottom line is that it's possible and one needs to exercise caution when a deal is too good to be true.

Most manufacturers make this impossible to do.
Even to replace the odometer there is a ridiculous amount of paperwork, and the new one has to be programmed to match the PJB serial.

Words to buy by.

there is a company that can reset odometer readings and set them to a new number, but they are federally controlled, and in order for them to do the work you need to prove ownership and have written signed documents from the government saying that this is the proper odometer readig and which car it is going to be put into. They are basically around for people needing a new gauge cluster due to electrical issues or who are swapping. I think i remember seeing that they can only go forward though, they won't reset them to a lower number.
