Wow, you never really learn quite as much as if you do things yourself. I learnt with this experiment that:

1) Me + double-sided tape don't get along very well...
2) Me + delicate paint-work don't get along very well...
3) Tired, sweaty, and covered in tape/paint, I think it went decently :)

SilentJay painted them himself.... He did a great job, and in a way he created a DIY in the process!!! LOL!!!

The clearcoat turned out decent, with some helpful hints from you guys :D It's still kinda textured and not as glossy as i'd like them to be, but they're pretty darned impressive for my first painting-job :D *proud*

The trick to getting smooth clear coat is not to lay it down thick. You're tempted to keep spraying to cover your flat base but don't. You'll just get want painters call Orange peel. (Looks bumpy like the surface of an orange)

Several thin coats will come out better although it takes longer to finish.

The other factors at play with spray painting is the distance you are spraying from, the type of reducer used to mix the paint and the nozzle of the gun/can. There are different reducers for different temperaturs/humidity that allow them to dry either very fast or slow. This contributes to the dull or shiny effect.

I'm not sure but they probably would have made up the custom rattle can with a medium reducer to allow you to work in moderate conditions.

Hope this helps

Looks good and "Me + double-sided tape " same issue with me... my one eyelid sticks out from the light... too much damn tape

=/ Just when I was getting all smug, I noticed the double-sided tape that was included in the package isn't very good. I found that different ends on both eyebrows are now dislodged and won't stick again.

I went and bought some "outdoor" 3M double-sided tape, hopefully that'll stick it down tomorrow. What a way to spend a birthday tomorrow :P

3M tape is some strong stuff..i bet it can hold some 500LB man to a ceiling:)

Make sure you clean both the headlight and the inside of the eyelids with rubbing alcohol. Let it dry (takes only a minute); then stick on your eyelids again.

How much did it cost at car quest? i recall you saying $33 + tax?

And as the clear coat, when spraying it on or even when spraying several coats of paint on the part, what is the best way to prevent dust particles from landing on it? Like once a little fuzz or spec of dust gets on it, you will notice it when u go up close.

Is there any method to prevent it? Such as have a wet ground so things dont fly up?

Canadian Tire. It's 3M Red colour tape.

Yep - The paint was about $34ish, taxes in. Before doing the painting, I hosed down the garage and swept the area as clean as I could. Thing is, if you're doing painting "indoors", you're going to need airflow, and fuzz is pretty inevitable. I set up my make-shift hydroponics area (aka a big plastic bag) to cover the eyebrows as they dried.

At CDN tire, there was the 3M tape, and there was the "duck" brand permanant mounting tape (that's what both products are marked as, in the paint dept). While the duck brand seems like a good idea, I kinda like the option of removing the tape later down the road.

Yep, they've held my upside-down mounted HID slim ballasts on through winter and all the other elements.

so you put a bag over your eyelids? how did air flow then?

Not directly onto the eyelids, I had the bag suspended over them.

Nicely done! Great work. How is tape holding on? Mine was starting to come off after a day.. so I poured a drop of superglue on the tape and now its holding up really well. BTW double sided tape came with eyelids..

SilentJay

Yeah, I was just noting - the double sided tape that the lids come with is crud :S I might have to go the superglue route, but I've noticed that if I double up the tape, because of the curviture of the eyebrow, more contact is made on the finer end.

one thing that works but too bad its painted, is to use a heat gun to make the eyebrow hug the headlight but since its painted it may bubble

SilentJay

^^^^ I used a hairdryer carefully, and it did bend more, but I didn't want to heat it up too much... no bubbling though
