View Full Version : Floor Jack
Can anyone suggest/recommend a good quality floor jack?
Motormaster, Michelin, Craftsman... ?
Appreciate any input.

How much lift do you need? Do you need a low-profile racing jack, or just a regular floor jack?
Enough lift to change the wheels over from all-season to winter. I guess a regular floor jack would do, preferably something that will last.

Honestly a basic CT floor jack will do the job. If you want to be really safe go for the kit that includes the jack stands, they're not really needed if all you're doing is changing tires though.
If there's a Princess auto near you they generally have good deals as well.

I can't even lift the front of my car up with my jack. I can get the jack underneath easily but I have no room to move the handle to work the jack.
What does everyone else do?
I think I need to drive up on some wood.
Does anyone know if our cars clear the smaller Rhino ramps?

I need one when they go on sale...or grab one from the states next time I'm there, from Harbour Freight...they have one with LED lights on the actual pad...for like $80USD.

yes I use rhino ramps when I change my oil. the clearance underneath is a bit tight but it's fine. I might put 2x4's under them to give me more room to work.

My MS3 won't clear the rhino ramps on approach. I have to drive up on a peice of wood first.
As for jacks, even cheap one's do the job if you use them within their limits.

You beat me to it! I was just about to post the very same thing. This jack is sturday and will not bend. It's not your average rinky dink CT jack. It's more of a floor jack or one that can be used at the track.

be sure to get safety stands as well. I've seen a jack fail before, aaaaaaaand it woulda been ugly if anyone was under the car. And if you can't get the jack under the front of the car, you can always use the side lip just behind the front wheels. Either jack up only the side you're working on, or jack up one side ->place safety stand-> then jack up the other side. Or if you're doing wheel/brake work jack up the strut arms and safety stand those.

That motomaster jack is a nice one. And its a very attractive price, as it doesn't go on sale for 40% often.
And if you can't fit it under your jack point, the cheapest way is to build your own ramp with 2x4's. There are plenty of guides, and I almost built one on a nice weekend--but then I remembered that I have no problems lifting my stock six. LOL

I have the cheap CT jack and 2.5ton jackstands, I think I got it as a package in sale for $49. Just for changing my tires it is great. I always use the jackstands and have never had a problem
Tip for changing wheels, make sure you use never seize on the rotor front and hub. It makes getting the tires off so easy, if you dont use it...well get ready to use a hammer and peice of wood.

Not to worry, it goes on a couple of times. I guesstimate it might be May next time.
Next time I see it I will PM you and put it in current deals.

I bought the CT locking jack over winter. My car is too low for it to clear. I'll need to drive a wheel on thick wood or wooden blocks to get clearance.

My parents bought me a powerfist (princess auto brand) heavy duty (3.25t) floor jack last year - works wonders, and I believe they got it for around $55

Yeah, regular hatch on prokits will hit rhino ramps on approach. So i've got ramps for my ramps, made out of 2x4's. Ditto for jacks.
I got a CT jobmate one (1tonne, light duty, gray in colour) and the seal went within 6months. Failed seal means it will slowly creep down.
