I've been searching the forums but I haven't found anything yet. my car is just over 10,000 km and noticed a puddle of oil under the car I went under to take a look and noticed that both the oil filter and oil drain plug were dry. but then I noticed that where the engine and transmission meet there was a leak of oil right in the crevice! Has anyone else had any issues with this happening or is this a one off?

yeah that's what it looks like and it's on a 10,000km car too that's less than 6 months old :( I just hope this isn't the first in a line of lemon alerts for this car. I wonder if it's from sitting on the lot for a long time?

It could be from sitting for a long time...My truck used to leak for a bit every spring cause the seal would dry out while my truck was parked for the winter...

Give it a few days and if it still leaks take it back to the dealer since you are still under warranty.

I've had two cars that would sit for long periods of time unused and would never leak... It doesn't sound normal.

My truck used to do it...only for the first day of driving it....after that the seal was good.

When it first did it i took the truck back cause it was under warranty and the mechanic told me it's cause the rear main seal dryed out...once i drive it it will be fine..and he was right..

that's what I think happened here, but that the car had been sitting around for too long idle on the dealer lot, and the seal dried up to the point that it got damaged? The car is a 2008 and the way mazda introduces their product line means that it was probably made sometime in 2007. I bought it in jan of 2009 NEW so it's potentially sitting there for 2 years without being driven. and yeah it's at the dealer right now getting looked at, they say they found 2 distinct spots along the seal where it is leaking. They say they have to wait for their service manager to look at it to see if it's a repair that is under warranty. They had better not try to pull a fast one on me.

This is definitely a warranty issue. There is no way a car that new should be leaking oil. Take it to the dealer and get it fixed. And it damn well better not cost you anything.

they're trying to dance around the issue that they have to have an engineer come down to look at it to declare if it is a warranty issue or not and that it might be up to a couple of weeks before I get the car in!

If i were you i would start using another dealer...this should be covered under warranty with out any enginers coming in to look at it.

I have had so many stupid things fixed under warranty with my car with no questions asked...inside if my trunk repainted and realighned, passenger side door repainted and reallighned, all this done when the car was over 1 year old and it had 40,000km on it...today i just got my water pump replaced cause it was leaking.....And the serivce i get form them keeps me coming back..if they tryed to do the samething to me as they are doing to you i would start using another dealer..my $.02

Definately! I think i'm actually going to drive out to Oakville for service from all the good thinks I hear and I want to try the famous cookies.

I did finally get the car back Wednesday night... and they had to put in a new transmission or so they say! Everything was covered under the warranty though. Yes that's right, you read it correctly a new transmission on a 6 month old car with 10,000 km on it, along with it they had to change the clutch and the pressure plate because there was oil on it! "Apparently" they said that the transmission had spun and that I had broken a spline on one of the shafts.
The guy also told me that I should take out the short shift because it's bad for the tranny. I asked him why and he just mumbled something about how it's to short and does something to the ratio's. I countered with that nothing has really changed, it's still the same selector forks and it's still the same cable linkages the only thing that's different is the handle, where the linkages attach to.

By the way this is/was at Yorkdale dufferin Mazda for any of you that are interested.

has anyone ever heard of a short shifter causing a transmission shaft spline break? And no I don't track the car. The only thing I might have to take a look at is if it changing gears over bumpy sections of road might have any contribution to it? Or if I just got a bad tranny from the factory

he just kind of huffed and said that well it's your choice do whatever you want, just remember if there's any problem with the transmission it won't be covered underwarranty. What i should have responded after was " If the short shift is an issue then why was it covered this time?" but I thought better of it and just got in my car and drove out.
