View Full Version : Engine light's on!

Along with my ABS light...
So I figured my car's under 100 k, and less than 5 years old so whatever it is must be covered by Mazda's amazing warranty right?
LOL HAH!
Mazda is truly the worst backed cars, it's stupid. I go to the dealership I tell em my engine light's on, first thing they mention "labour is 98 an hour". I reply "I have warranty..." and than they reply "yea but there's no telling if it'll be covered under the warranty", and than I ask "so the warranty is completely useless and simply a scam into making people believe you'll back up the sh*tboxes you sell?" and the dumba** says "yes". I don't think she knew she said yes, but I gave her a blank stare...
I than proceeded to letting her and everyone else know in the waiting area of the service department why buying a mazda is the stupidest decision you'll ever make.
So any ideas why the engine light may be on, and while we're at it why the ABS light is on too?
Let me mention this so far: My 3 is an 06 meaning it's 3 years old...
-new clutch
-the paint's condition is already horrendus
-the engine starts making a weird noise every so often
-engine lights come on
-abs lights come on
-my suspension makes creaking noises
-my foglights aren't properly in place
Like wow what the hell did I get myself into...
How many KM are on your car...cause if it's over 80,000km i don't see what you want them to do for you...since these cars are 80,000km bumper to bumper and 100,000km is power train warranty

What you do is you get a dealership to update your software (if it needs updating). They will give u a print out of the entire process along with ALL the codes (including the abs light).
It was half /hours labour for me.

You got a lemon.
I bought a Mazda Protege from 2002 and have had zero natable problems.
What dealership gave you that response? Maybe the person was having a bad day or they suck at their job. There's a lot of variables here.
If you don't want to risk them reading your code and it NOT being covered under warranty. Go to CT or PA and buy a code reader find out the code and return it when your done.
The service advisor is correct in telling you that if the issue isn't covered, you gotta pay. Such is life.

Don't freak out just yet. It could be something as simple as the sensor. Or maybe there really is something wrong, do you notice anything weird happening with the engine? I'm not sure they'll charge you $98/hour just to check with a code reader... maybe try another dealership?
Oh and a word of advice, try not to lose your temper when you go in there and they don't tell you what you want to hear. There are so many threads of people here who threw a tantrum and stamped their feet in the middle of the dealership, and they were either banned from there or refused any kind of service after passing on the word to other dealerships... I find if you're retarded nice, regardless of the situation, they'll want to do a hell of a lot more for you and throw in some favours here and there. It sucks though, another reason why buying an extended warranty can be scam-a-licious :chuckle Anyway juuust my advice. Good luck!

why don't you just go to a meet and maybe someone will be nice enough to scan it for you to see what the code is (and possibly clear it for you)

Well said Betty I agree with you on this 100%:bana2
I find if you go in a place and talk to the poeple with manners then they will do their best to help you out...but if you start yelling the only thing they will do is laugh about you when you walk out the door..

Only reason I'm so dissapointed with Mazda is because other car companies and dealerships seem to cover problems like these without any issues!
For example, two of my friends own Hyundai's, one owns the Genesis, the other the new Santa Fe, Santa Fe's engine light came on boom, they diagnosed it FOR FREE, and turns out that ANYTHING to do with the engine light was covered under the warranty anyways. The guy with the genesis had his clutch give out on the first week, they replaced it free of charge no questions asked plus payed for the tow truck...
My friends mom owns a chev aveo and under her warranty not only are those problems and issues covered with no problem, so is her oil change! SHE GETS FREE OIL CHANGES!!
All I'm saying is Mazda is the worst backed car company out there period.

I agree Mazda really needs to improve its backend services.. Sales is fine, but the service dept needs alot of work.
Tsirpas, sorry to hear about all your issues, but yeah we all know Maada paint is as tin as paper. we just gotta live with it i guess.
Can i ask what kind of CAI you run? Maybe that's the reason the service guys quoted tyou a labour cost? Automatically thinking the CAI was the cause?
Try another dealer, go to Scarboro Mazda or one of the others known on the board, they can give you a better idea of the problem
Good luck!

its possible that she may have just been saying that to you to cover her ass incase whatever was wrong wasn't covered. I know many people who have lost it because they issue wasn't covered. Warranties don't neccesarily cover you 100%, thats just how warranties are, ever warranty has an issue somewhere and defintely some people are gunna have problems that don't fall into the covered category. I would also suggest trying another dealership and try being a little bit more civil when in the service department, they tend to responde better to a smile rather than an angry customer.

Mazda is not the only one. Business is business and everyone is out to make money not lose it.

You're comparing your buddy's 1 week old clutch blowing up to you 3 yr old car's CEL coming on?
Wat?

I guess you haven't picked up a newspaper in a while or watched the news. GM along with other domestic car manufacturers are struggling to stay afloat.
Of course, they'll give you free BASIC services, anything to get the cars sold. They'll even throw you a Wii if you're willing to risk buying one of their soon-to-be discontinued cars.

haha ya, up north they are doing the whole "buy a van and we'll give you a car deal", if you buy one of the big cargo vans they will throw in a compact car, how crazy is that!

Meh, my mom has an 06 mazda3 and she gets free oil changes too. I ended up with free now tires. It all depends on what you negotiate with the dealer.
Mazda is hardly the "worst backed car", your friends probably have had great experiences because they go to a great dealership. You just got shafted at the one you go to normally, so switch it up! Tell them you'll be bringing your services elsewhere. (Nicely. lol) There are several dealerships that will want to help you out and cut you a deal to gain future business from you. Their loss. :whoa

The ABS light indicates there is a problem with your ABS system - as a result, you have no anti-lock brakes. This problem could be as simple as debris fouling the sensor, which will cause the computer to deactivate the ABS. A good blast of compressed air in and around the wheels (especially by the calipers) will help get some of that off. Failing this, have a mechanic inspect the system (but not a mechanic from the dealership). If you know specifically what is wrong, it helps the delearship narrow down the problem very quickly.
The Check Engine Light is potentially more serious (but this comes on in all manner of less serious cases as well). The first thing to check here is to make sure your gas cap is tightened properly. If it's tight, see if you can find someone with an OBD II reader to scan the code for you, and get more information.
Lastly, to echo what others have said, keep cool! Service is much more responsive and considerate (at least in my experience) if you treat them with respect.

+1. I agree business is business. It's clearly stated in the contract. If you are within the 3year/80k frame, they should cover everything unless it is due to wear and tear. Stuff like the clutch, if you need to replace the clutch, u should really consider changing your driving habits because u must pop the clutch a lot when racing or accelerating really fast or you must ride your clutch like there's no tomorrow. They consider the clutch as an item that wears over time depending on driving habits.
For me, everytime i got a cel, i took it to the dealer and they checked it, fixed it free of charge. Now that my 3yr/80k is up, i dont take it to them because i know that i'll get the same answer you did UNLESS it is something to do with the engine which I belive u might still be entitled to 5yr/100k. If something is wrong with drivetrain or powertrain, THEN THEY will fix it free of charge.
If i were you, try taking it to another dealership. I admit the paint on the mazda is crappy but I honestly couldn't be happier with my car.
I wish you best of luck.
