My cousin's uncle wants to buy some projectors for his civic and hids as well. He really likes how those stock BMWS and Acura's have the hid that look normal colour but when they are driving and go over a bump or hill where the angle is different, you see a purplish colour but when the angle of the light changes again it goes back to normal.

Im not sure if you guys know what Im talking about but im sure you all noticed this.

Well my question is, is it the projectors that cause the light to change colour on a certain angle because the projector is focusing the light? Or is it because of the stock hid temperature (i believe it is 4300k).

Because I have 6000k and i dont think that my headlight changes colour regardless of which angle you look at it from.

Can anyone tell me how to achieve that stock look from the BMWs and Acuras?

Buy an after market projectors (headlights 2pcs) for civic, their projectors is different from mazda3, and the projectors is the only one can change the color of the light, even u put a regular bulb, the projectors will change color in different angle even in daylights

hope u know what i mean (pardon the english LOL)

Just to elaborate, it is the projector lens itself which causes the "flicker" (common term for the phenomenon you're describing). If you're outside of the focused beam of white light from the HIDs, the lens refracts the white light so in certain spots you see the purple/blue components of that white light.

As mentioned, you have to get lights which are made for the civic with projector housings, as the stock lights are reflectors (like the Mazda3 high-beams) and won't give you any flicker, just tons of glare. So look for ones that other Civic drivers have used that give some amount of flicker, or look into swapping out the lenses, or lastly, using some washers to space out the lenses from the stock locations slightly.

To get that "flicker effect" your going to need tsx/bmw/lexus/other projector.

I would think it's a combination of both.
I have aftermarket HID's and from different angles, my lights look different as well. It's a combination of the temperature and the projector.

yea i was thinking it might be the projector lens

So if I get him aftermarket headlights with projector lens, would hids fit in there? As that is what he is planning to do. Would all hid temperatures work? Like I dont notice it much on our 3's with the 6000k and all the flickering that occurs on those stock cars with stock projectors are 4300k. So would I need to get 4300k? Or would 6000k work as well?

To get that "flicker effect" your going to need tsx/bmw/lexus/other projector.

Then if i buy headlights with projectors already in them (if they have it, I havent really looked yet because I wanted to find what causes the flickering first), is there a chance that it might not flicker? Would i need specific projector lens? Would I need some retrofit ones? Would the ones that come with the aftermarket headlights (as long as they have projector lens) give off the flickering effect?

higher end cars have higher end projectors.

if you want to get that purplish flicker, the best/easiest/guaranteed way is to but different projecters. TSX or evo projectors work the best. whether or not they're the same size as aftermarket civic projects is a different story, but your probably going to be looking at custom work.

It really doesn't have much to do with the HID colour temperature. Most OEM bulbs are 4-5000K at the most. As I mentioned, it is very dependent on the projector lens. The other thing to consider, is that if you get an aftermarket Civic projector that is designed for halogen bulbs, it almost certainly won't be designed to optimize HID bulbs and hence have any flicker to it. You can use it for HID sure (just like we do in the Mazda) but there is some glare and not a lot of flicker.

You have to look for projector lenses to swap in from something like a TSX/S2000 etc (as was posted) because they have high-end HID projector lenses which are optimized for the HID beam and produce flicker outside of the beams focus range.

My car (09 Ralliart) has the purple evident at the top on the OEM HIDs, i figure its the projectors.

Hmm, i'll let him know that it is most likely the projector lens. If anything i doubt he will do the custom projectors lens.

Thanks a lot guys. Great forum full of resources

Just to clarify the differance between high end projectors that get that color.

The cutoff is much sharper and the glass is potentially higher quality thus reflecting the light in a different way, changing the color.
