Hey guys,
my auto wipers keep randomly wiping when theres nothing there!
i looked at my sensor part and there is something black on half the sensor.
i'm pretty sure that is the problem and am wondering if i could get that cleaned out or fixed.

Yeah, mine does that randomly too, but I just stopped using auto and only turn it on when it rains.

How old are your wipers? I found with old wipers that didn't wipe well I would have that problem, but when I got new ones it was a lot better. But if your car is still under warranty you could take it back to the dealer and they can recalibrate it.

Do you keep your wipers on in Auto Mode even if it doesn't rain?

Its a good habbit to it turn OFF after you use your wipers. Come winter time and your windshield forms a sheet of ice, you can cook your wipers motor as it will get jammed. Theres a few members here that had to bring it to the dealer because of this.

I recall one member saying it came on while going through a car wash. The rotating brushes nearly ripped them off.

Yikes... that's his fault for going through a brush wash. Didn't think there were too many of those around now-a-days.
I leave mine on (cause I don't think to turn them off after the rain stopped as the wipers are not going) and have experienced them swiping for no reason on a nice sunny day. And it has done a couple sweeps in a row some times, and there are no bug splats, sap, or any other thing that I could see that would have triggered it.
Mine did that to...I took mine back to the dealer and they told me that a bug, lighting etc can make it turn on...so i keep it off and turn it on when it rains

haha YES keep them off in the winter... trust me.... lol
Mine go off if the tiniest leaf hits the sensor... it's normal, for the most part.
You can change your sensitivity as well. Not sure how much that will help though.
Its a nice feature to have if it worked properly mind you.

Mine worked incredibly well until I had my windshield replaced. After that the it worked well 70% of the time. When it rains and it goes into "spastic" mode it stays there. I have to shut the wipers off and then restart them for them to go back to normal.
On the american forums there is a big complaint that after replacing your windshield the wipers never really work the same way again.
Thats not good.
My daughter loves it when the wipers go fast, especially when there is hardly any rain on the windshield, or other times when it is pouring and they dont wipe :)

All 3 of the MAzda 3s I have owned have done this from day 1. Plus the little +/- adjustment is a joke. With a steady mist you aan turn the knob full + or - with no difference what so ever. Of course when I took the first car to the dealer I get the "cannot not duplicate".
I would prefer the old delay wipers any day.

LOL!!!!!! It's trueeeee!!!!!! It's so funny how a feather will set it off and it goes nuts, and when it rains hard sometimes they just kinda sit there... I usually have to "reset" mine as well... makes me wonder if my windshield had been replaced by the previous owner :whoa

Thanks for all the replies. I feel better that im not the only one with this problem. But as i stated in my original post, there is some sort of black substance in my sensor.
Here are some pictures that might illustrate the problem...

Im wondering what that black substance is? and how can i get that off?

Dealer said wipers were ok, but I am sure when out of warranty they will find something wrong... leave the wipers off

I have to agree, + or - makes no difference, delay wipers much better...

It's hard to tell but thats the location where the rear view mirror is glued to the windshield. Has the windshield been replaced? I say this because it looks like the rear view mirror is pulling away from the glass. It's really hard to tell though from those pictures.

i dont think the windshield has been replaced. is there a way to clear that out?
Cardinal Fang

Not sure. I'm assuming you bought the car used then? That area should be all black. You shouldn't have that portion that is light coloured in the shape of the rectangle with rounded edges.

oh really? i was thinking i should been all clear. and yes the car i bought used. it has only been around 3 weeks since the purchase. i just went out to check it out again. it seems to be some sort of liquid, it looks purplish when the sun is directly on it. hmm.. any suggestions on what to do? does the used warranty cover this?
Cardinal Fang

I can't help you there about the warranty. If you can see about removing the plastic cover from the inside to expose the connection.
