lol. I feel like a bit of a dumb**** but oh well...

so Im a DIYer and like almost everyone here I too have the mazda 3 rust issue on the rear drivers side fender... just the one fender, and a spot on the rear passenger door... the passenger side fender is perfectly fine...

so I decided to touch up two pea sized bubbles last night and ended up doing a bit more, made sure the underside of the fender was nice and clean, etc, did another little spot. so a couple hours of sanding later I have an area thats about 5-6 inches wide and maybe half an inch high at some points off the rear fender that needs to be painted...

I prime it with two coats, make sure its smooth and go get my paint stick (thanks to whoever suggested letting it bleed in a cup and then paintbrushing it on the car). Im all ready to paint and then dab the stick and like three little ****ing drops dribble out :bang :bang :bang

****! and its canada day and the mazda dealers are most likely closed... I dont know if I wanna risk only being able to do a fraction of the visible area (the underside of the fender can wait until I get more paint)

can I drive with this bit of primer on for a couple days until the weekend or until I get some paint ordered if I have to???? :bang. I see some old cars driving with primer etc...

oh well at least the rust is fixed.............................for now

:bang

I think as long as it doesn't rain you should be ok ..

2 coats of primer should be fine, rain or shine. As long as you don't leave bare metal exposed. Primer's purpose is to seal the metal. Have you not seen rat rods driving around that are all primer? A day or 2 won't hurt.

thanks guys. I actually had enough paint to cover the visible areas... not as bad as I thought

ive seen people drive with primer on their car for days, weeks, months, etc etc.
who cares.
if you're that worried, give it a good clean, lightly sand it, and give it another light coat of primer.

Most primers in rattle cans will absorb water, even if it is humid, it will absorb. Primer is not a sealant it is for better adhesion of paint. Now saying that, epoxy primers do great job at sealing metal.
When it is time for proper paint it should be stripped again, and metal prepped (rust converted too)

Big +1, I would not leave it too long with just primer exposed, as it will rust! ...from absorbing moisture...This I can say from experience....even a temporary coating of paint over the primer would be a better choice, imo.

Ya don't drive in primer. If you have to make sure to use a sealer primer over the primer.

But its better just to topcoat the primer asap.

hi guys, sorry for the bump, thanks for the help so far though.

Ive finally got this damn spot on the fender painted. I used acrylic enamel (the basecoat + clearcoat in one). the guy at carquest said since I had a light metallic colour that this would match better. I think he was right because the match is very close, Im happy with how it turned out

however, because I taped the area theres a very slight tape line or 'ridge' separating the old paint from the new - and u can see sort of the outline. if you cover the line up with your finger you can hardly tell the difference between the old paint and the new paint, even from inches away and I was told to wax it so it would shine a bit more

should I polish and just buff the area, smoothing out the ridge to be flush with the old paint? or just wetsand, wait, then wax? I read that metallic paints get dull if you polish them. Id be hand buffing, not machine buffing as well

I planned on getting a really fine polish by meg's and using a TC, but if its going to ruin my paint job then Ill just be pissed and have to do it aaaaaallllllllll over again... lol
