So my car is at oakville mazda right now... getting the 48K service done (i'm actually at 57K)

saying that my front brakes are at 4mm and I should replace them and the rotors and quoted me just over $500.

I think that's way too much money for just the front brakes, I'm pretty sure I can get all 4 at half that no?

Anyways, does it make sense that rotors are going too at 57k?

looking for advice on what to do and what shop to use.

If your doing it your self or you know someone that can do it for ya then you can get it done way cheaper with after market brakes...but if you are going to be taking it to any garage then they all are going to be around the same price.

Brakes very when they wear out how you use them, speed, using them hard etc all this will make them wear out faster

Good luck!

yeh i drive aggressive, so thinking about it 57 k isn't too bad for me...

how much should i be paying for brakes/rotors

do you really have to replace the rotors? i though rotors outlast the brakes.

I noticed this group buy http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=34957
comments?

Is that price with the TM3 discount? Do they know you're a member?
Note that Oakville is one of the more trustworthy dealerships out there.

The group buy is an option. You could also PM one of the sponsors that carry Hawk products(CTA PAtrique, Supershyguy), and get a different offering.
It is not uncommon to have to replace rotors at ~60K. I had to replace my original rotors around that mileage.

Yeh, they know I'm a tm3 member.

I'll buy aftermarket and get them installed elsewhere.

Thanks for input everyone.

I have another question... I just picked up my car and am looking at the brake calipers, I just had them painted like 2 months ago, and now it seems that paint has been removed or something at different spots. I know to do the service they have to pull apart the calipers but does that ruin the caliper paint job?

My guess is that the heat got to them. If you've spent your rotors, then things have gotten quite hot. Maybe you chose a poor type of pain for that kind of application, or they were inadequately prepped.

4mm? Fail on a safety would be 2mm. I would say that you should get at least another service out of them before replacing them. That's of course if you weren't having any pulse problems from the brakes originally

Brakes are fine right now... I'll prolly take advantage of the group buy and keep parts on hand for when I do need them.

Regarding calipers, they were done by simplytire who do a very thorough job, but it wast mistake... Upon closer inspection, it wasn't the rusty metal that I was noticing or paint having come of, it was some sort of grease/oil that I guess they didn't clean off. I'll post a pic so you see what I mean. But a simple wipe and it came off and calipers are fine...

$500 seems a bit high for just the front.
usually, a front brake job consists of
replace pads/replace rotors/slider guide service/possible clean and adjust

however, alot of a brake job is labour, and dealers charge more, so that MAY add to the cost

I got my pads from Just Brakes in toronto. The rotors were also fairly cheap but in the end was very satisified, get the hell outta that dealer.. Just like the time they told me my cat would cost $800.. retards.

Go for it, that's a good deal... :( wish i had an extra 400$ )

I would never consider paying 500$ for JUST front brake service and pads. I would learn how and do it myself, which I did already and it's super easy. Hardest part is getting the old rotors off. Check out some of the how-to's around here, man I learned all I need from them. Good Luck !

Labour cost is also $$$. Dealers go by the book when it comes to labour. If it says "3 hours" but it only takes 2hr they will bill you for 3hr.

But if it takes longer then you only pay the 3:chuckle

Call G-Force brakes, they are a company from ebay that are located in the GTA. They gave me a quote of $275 for everything to do all 4 corners. 1-800-823-6945 and it's the same brakes some of the sponsors are selling for alot more here!
