I just got my car like 2 days ago, decided to wipe through the manual and came across the section that covers the lamp switches.

In my manual it says Fogs can be switched on when low beams are on and only illumination is on (its the setting right before the low beams, just lights up the tail and dash).

what is the problem? the manual or my car, I have a 2010 gs hatch 3.

Thanks for your input guys, appreciate it.

Is the title of this thread correct? Don't you mean "cannot switch on Fogs without low beams ON."

This is how all Mazda 3s are, unless you mod it to be otherwise. Unless you've turned the headlight stalk to illumination or low beams on, the fogs will not come on.

title is messed. ya the manual says I can turn on fogs with only illumination on, no low beams, but cannot. The only way my fogs come on is with the low beams. Basically I cannot turn just the illumination of the dash and have my fogs running. Maybe the manual is wrong, or because my model is a GS

Actually I think I am mistaken. I think you can only turn them on with the headlights (lowbeams). It's been so long since my setup has been stock I've forgotten. Sorry.

not a problem cwp_sedan, I'm most likely going to do some wire modding to have independant fogs but i was just curious why the manual says that. for others reading, is yours like that too?

then it's a typo... only non-US/Canada/Mexico models can do this!

it's a very stupid thing they did because it takes away the ability to use fog lights when you really need them (as even headlights would be too dangerous in thick fog)

so doing the "fog light mod" has been one of THE things to do

thanks for the clarification TheMan, I will be looking into the mod soon.

It's actually a smarter thing to do since you should NOT be using your high beams in thin/thick fog.

So use your fogs with low beams only. Also that the fogs are probably rendered useless with the intensity of the high beams.

So once again, they are thinking for you. I'm not advocating this, since I want to control when I have my fogs on. I got annoyed but accepted it.

totally agree with ya, though I would prefer manual control of things like that. on a side note, I can't get past the int wiper function removed completely in my car. i dont like the auto feature, lol.

SAME! I hate how the wiper levels are organized. I wish I could switch them!

0 - manual, hold to activate
------------
1 - OFF
2 - AUTO
3 - LOW
4 - HIGH
------------

I wan't to switch levels 1 and 2. So when I manually actuate it, it goes back to AUTO. I hate having to put it back in AUTO after manually actuating it, esp when I use the fluid.

thanks for the driving lesson but the OP and the rest of us aren't talking about wanting to use fog lights with high beams

we want to use fog lights with JUST parking lights, the same way people in the rest of the world are able to do! why? because its safer to drive with JUST fog lights in super heavy fog... I've done that a few times in my protege already because the headlights (properly aimed) casted too much back glare in heavy fog and made visibility worse than driving with just fog lights at 30km/h
