View Full Version : Weird tick/click/squeak sound at high speeds?

Here's a doozy....
I noticed today on the highway that I get a strange ticking/squeaking sound sort of? It's like a click with a hint of squeak... and it's pretty fast.
Some Coles notes:
Sound is coming from front of car
It only happens when I'm at speeds of 100-120 + (Sometimes it happens at 110kph and sometimes it won't happen until 120kph, but the faster I go the more prominent it is
Not a fan/vent... I thought maybe it sounded like a squeaky be a fan of some sort, so I turned off the A/C and it didn't affect the noise at all
It's not a rattle as the sound remained consistent when going over bumps, changing lanes etc
It sounds like it could be something related to a flapping in the wind, or a belt of some sort maybe?
Hmmmm it's like a riddle... Whoever gets it right wins a prize.
:chuckle
Thanks for any input offered :)

Alignment was done 2 weeks ago.... you think that could be the tires??? It's so... I dunno.. metal-sounding?.... Your tires make the same sound?

mine is so loud it drives me nuts..
was the alignment out at all when you did it?

Well... thing is they were really unbalanced... so I was getting a horrible vibration, and a slight pull.
They did an alignment/balance. Balancing helped, no more vibrations, but I still have a bit of a pull...
As well, when I bought the car I had them put snow tires on for me, but they never actually marked which tire was which, so maybe when I put them back on this spring they've worn uneven?
I'm just having a hard time imagining how tires would sound like that... although it would make sense as the previous vibrations were only felt at highway speeds as well... hmmm :whoa
So, your tires sound like they're ticking, but have a bit of a squeak?
I don't know how your sounds..it's always hard to describe sounds cars are making..lol

why not go to a dealership and have them test drive it and see?

Because Dealers are famous for the CANNOT REPLICATE problem.
Maybe one of your mudflaps are loose. It can and does happen.

I got agree with you on this bean:chuckle
Midas or places like that will give you free estimates..by taking it to the dealer you are going to have to pay by the hour to find out what it is...and trust most dealers will recomend a bunch of things for you to do to fix the problem.
If i am not mistaken did you not say your dad is a mechanic? if he is why not have him look at your car?
So true
My car does the same thing and it was the tires

He is, but he lives in barrie....it's hard when I'm allllllll the way in Ottawa... boooo
And yah I know another mechanic wouldn't be able to replicate it, I'm not sure I can ask them to break the speed limit and drive 130k to replicate the sound.... haha

I guess next time you going to visit your pops you might want him to take a look:chuckle

haha yep...
Well I think I might have figured out what it is... the screws in the shield underneath had loosened and was hanging down for a couple of weeks... there was a small piece of plastic ripped and also hanging down (probably ran over something without realizing the shield was loose) I had it screwed back in during my last oil change, even though it needs replacement...
That's when the noise started so I think that little piece might be rattling in the wind... Hopefully that's all it is.
I guess the only way to find out is to tear off the piece or drop $300 for a new one :( booooo...
