View Full Version : Chevy Camaro - Quality Issues???

Alright, the Camaro has been out a few months and seems to be selling at a brisk pace. Good looking car (exterior only.....the interior is awful IMO).
Funny enough, I've see more Hyundai Genesis' on the streets lately.
Anyways, below is an article about a list of problems that have been plaguing a few owners. Check out the list and decide if its first model year issues or if GM has not really gotten hold of its quality control issues.
DETROIT — One of the bright spots in a bleak inventory of sales numbers for the new General Motors Co. has been the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. GM executives in recent weeks have pointed to the new-age Camaro as the example of how GM can connect expressive cars with customers willing to pay full price.
Luckily for GM, the car has a receptive audience — after just three months on the market, the Camaro made a major statement by outselling the Ford Mustang in June — because the Camaro's launch has been anything but smooth, largely due to quality-control issues.
After fits and starts, the Camaro rollout hit another pothole this week when GM confirmed to Camaro enthusiast Web site Camaro5.com that the company is suspending shipments of Camaro SSs (V8-engined) with manual transmissions while engineers investigate reports of failed output shafts.
It isn't yet known if GM will recall manual-transmission Camaro SSs that are already sold, but one insider tells Inside Line it is unlikely given the low numbers involved. Through June, Chevrolet sold a total of 15,397 Camaros, but manual-transmission SS models represent a markedly smaller population.
In January, GM delayed Camaro production for one month, pushing back the start of production at its Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, assembly site from February 16 to March 16 as engineers grappled with quality-control and supplier issues.
From there, the Camaro has endured a litany of confirmed and anecdotal quality problems perhaps most entertainingly characterized by an unintentionally humorous list posted at Camaro5.com to help potential new owners scour their Camaro for quality issues reported by other buyers.
The lengthy — and sometimes hilarious — checklist includes such worrying entries as loose oil-pan bolts and oil-cooler leaks; "mismatched paint on parts of the vehicle;" hoods that won't unlatch, intermittent air-conditioning operation; loose emblems and interior trim pieces and misaligned and poorly fitting body panels.
Inside Line says: The entire checklist of 65 items the forum suggests new owners inspect before taking Camaro delivery can be found on the Web site's forum. — Bill Visnic, Senior Editor, Edmunds' AutoObersver.com
001. Loose Bolts that hold fluid back causing leaks (ex: on oil pan, tranny fluid)
002. Trunk Locking mechanism (issues with opening w/o adding down pressure to top of trunk first and/or emergency release appears to be loose keeping the trunk from locking properly)
003. Loose plastic paneling around the 4-gauges cluster, launch control, cigarette power plug as well as Left and Right A-Pillars Trim Loose, sill trim loose, and dash pannel where doors and dash meet popping open.
004. Loose Spoiler/installed correctly (Re-torque Spoiler bolts)
005. Wiper transmission cable overheating from engine causing a short circuit.
006. Matching Headlight Halos strength. (one defective being dimmer then the other).
007. Mismatched paint on parts of the vehicle (including gas door). As well as paint runs or clear coat runs. Paint Chips.

024. Doors gaps /alignment
025. Dirt/bubbles in rally stripes
026. Door panel not scratched from seat belt.
027. Shift knobs wearing out extremely fast could be faulty material

056. Drive-shaft connection to the differential cracking when dropping the clutch
057. Tach Needle Sticking
058. Wiper motor wiring comes through bottom of the cowling-well in front of the driver. (The fix (decided upon between the dealer and myself) was to re-insulate the wires, cover the harness with a hard, slick plastic covering, drill a small hole in the bottom of the cowling-well (fill the hole with silicone) and use a cable tie down like the rest of the wiper harness uses to secure the harness to the floor of the cowling (the grommet will collapse downward with little force), far away from harm from the wiper arms.)
059. engine makes continuous clicking noise, starting roughly 5 seconds after engine starts
060. Door Sill plates wrinkled on outside edges (both sides)
061. Trunk gasket at bottom of rear window coming off

066. Weather stripping at back of rear windows loose (I can literally grab and peel it back).
067. Missing or peeling paint between trunk lid and spoiler (right rear section)--could possibly spread over time down the trunk lid.
068. Driver's seat makes clicking noises when set all the way back.

I have second hand info from a guy who works at a manufacturer for the front and rear fascia of the Camaro, that the tooling, molds and calibration tools do not all fit together as designed.

Sounds just about right for a GM manufactured automobile. There is a very good reason the price of the Camaro is 'competitive'...

I used to compare TSB and Recall lists between different cars whenever a friend would think of purchasing a domestic car. I would pull up lists for two cars of the same year and class then compare them. What a difference! It can make a believer out of just about anyone.

the 2010 is the old car with a facelift, hardly a brand new car. Brand new cars often have a lot of little things needing to be worked out on the first year which is why its generally best to wait to the second year so these things can be worked out.
the mazdaspeed3 dropped its engine when it first came out which is a bit more serious than a miss painted bolt imo

That should no longer be used as an excuse. Even Camaro owners are pretty suprised with all these issues. From that list, most of those items should be pretty basic stuff. Perhaps with all the cost cutting thats been going on at GM, something had to give.
I'm actually afraid to see what will happen when the Volt comes out.
Everyone knew that the Camaro was going to sell out. Lets just see if they can maintain their sales like the Mustang has.

Everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. GM owners, especially those of the Camaro see this car as one of their great hopes for a company that was once the engine of America and is now just emerging from bankruptcy protection.
Nostalgia and previous of pony cars play a huge part in these cars initial sales. Remember, these care were never known for their top notch quality and build but they still had their loyal fanbase.
The problem with these minor issues is that they do add up. GM needs to get NEW consumers to look at them differently and with a list like this and ease of access to this info through the internet, how do you think the average consumer that is looking at a Camaro will judge the product. General Motors latest ads talk about a new company and a new direction. For potential customers to consider a GM, they need to hear more good things than bad right now.
Rant over. :chuckle

I bet you could make a list like this on the 2010 Mazda3.
Wasn't someone here not be able to open drivers door ?
This list could be one issue per car in thousands, it is not quantified for the sample size. Thus irrelevant.

I'm pretty sure my buddy is gonna get a Camero as his second car, he already owns a new Silverado (they're a GM family). I admit I would be slightly jealous but not if the car has this many problems!!!! Its just sad. Hope GM fixes it though, the Camero is a great car in terms of price versus looks and performance.

bringing this thread back to life.
Myself and white phil had the opportunity to test drive a 2010 Camaro SS. The opportunity came about as i was at Square One shopping centre and GM was holding a test drive event where everyone could test drive vehicles from the GM line up. We both got in the car and i was sitting in the back seat...i know it was 2 door coupe and space would be limited but they could of at least added a little bit more head room gosh as i was going over bumps i got a headache from hitting my head so many times on the ceiling. I should have taken a picture of the interior of the car while i was in the backseat...but i forgot. the handle to move the seat forward was directly in the middle of the front seat..facing the back of course..which i found odd but easy to find..still a horrible design.
Now onto the driving part..
I get into the driver seat and i immediately nail my elbow off the centre console..*WTF OWW mother ****ing sh1t* i'm not really a fan of power front seats..it takes away from bring active..you just feel lazy when you have that option. The seat belt was a pain in the ass to reach as i had to turn around and look for where it was hiding behind the driver seat...wtf? Put the car in drive and off we went. Ride comfort was meh as we were riding on 20" rims i mean they look nice but they were ****ing huge!!! Burying the accelerator to the floor and releasing all 426hp to the rear wheels was easy..now slowing down this thing was even easier which didnt take much effort at all since it had brembo brakes all around..shocking. It took corners nicely but it would have been better if it was lowered more and had 18" or 19" rims. The design is cool but the plain interior dash needs alot more work.

^^ My added review to the test drive:
Exterior is hot. 20" Wheels looked hot! I love how everything is big and mean, its an aggressive looking car all around. i can not complain on the exterior.
Getting in, wow did this car feel cheap. Felt like they took the interior out of the late 90's and touched it up a bit. This is where GM goes wrong in my books. Interior was so weak. The center console felt like cheap plastic, the dash felt like cheap plastic. The retro style mixed with modern tech felt cheesy. The steering wheel was actually really nice. Seat belt, as phil mentioned, was a pain in the ass to find. The release on the back to lower the seat is actually a great idea. Headroom in the back is horrible. Seats felt really comfy, but looked cheap with their black on white stitching.
On to the driving... You felt like you were driving a huge boat, but you felt like it moved ever so effortlessly. Power was there when you needed it, acceleration was decent with the torque. Handling was surprisingly good. I felt the suspension was very very solid.
Overall: 7/10
GM could do better... btw.. i hate the shifter knob. omg its so huge *no homo*

My stepdad was one of the first guys to get the new Camero in the GTA, and he still loves the car. Every time he goes out for a drive, people still stare at it and will come up to ask questions/look at the car when he parks. I think it's an awesome car to drive around and it looks really badass, but I personally would never buy one for myself. Like the other people have said, I'm not the biggest fan of the interior, which is my main criticism of his car. My other annoyance is the blindspots, which can also be pretty bad when driving around (but I guess you would get used to it once you are more comfortable driving it).

Acutally, here is a review of the Camaro with this issue.
http://www.canadiandriver.com/2009/03/21/first-drive-2010-chevrolet-camaro.htm/2
"Headroom is limited in cars equipped with a sunroof. Even at a compact 170 cm (5′7″), my head was touching the roof with the power seat set at its lowest point. The seatbelt is tough to reach; maybe it gets easier with practice."
I guess everyone is different but I've never had a problem reaching for the seat belt since it's atached to the seat... The only thing I can day is it foes have limited head room

006. Matching Headlight Halos strength. (one defective being dimmer then the other).
I can assure you all that this issue has been alleviated for quite some time since I was one of the one's responsible for taking care of that problem. I can build any model of Camaro headlights (including some not yet released) with my eyes closed. One of the things I did this summer was setup, run, maintain, and troubleshoot the Camaro headlight production line. I've personally built many hundreds of Camaro headlights from start to finish on my own - predominantly for testing and verification purposes.
The unreleased taillights are SO sexy. The nicest light I have seen on a vehicle.

Acutally, here is a review of the Camaro with this issue.

"Headroom is limited in cars equipped with a sunroof. Even at a compact 170 cm (5′7″), my head was touching the roof with the power seat set at its lowest point. The seatbelt is tough to reach; maybe it gets easier with practice."
Yup... even without a sunroof, I only had about an inch of head room with the seat at the lowest point... and I'm 5'7"
And i'm also with phil on this... I had a hard time finding the seat belt... it definitely was NOT attached to the seat in the one I test drove at the beginning of September.

How could you have had a hard time to find the seat belt when it is atached to the seat??

Have you ever been in a camaro from the 70's??
They made the interior like the it was in the 70's.
Besides what is so plan about the interiro? my buddy owns one and it's a awesome car inside and out side
my dad own a 69 ss and i have a 71 z28 and the interior of the 5th gen is nothing like a early 70s car. so bad comparison on your part.
i love the 5th gen camaros and both white and black phil know that so i aint arguing. i know the interior is cheap but the cars platform is chassis motor and heritage make up for all that. i had the opportunuty of taking my buddies 2010 ss down the track on saterday and it was nice running 12.8s in a car with just a header intake and exhaust on street tires.
muscle cars are meant for big power and smoking tires, if you want leather wrapped dashes and stuff go buy a merc/bmw/audi. i for one wouldnt tho because a caddy cts-v has all those creature comforts along with magnetic ride and 550 supercharged ponies...

...
Well i don't own one from the 70's or 60's so i wasn't comparing to anyhting... The interior might not be exactly like YOURS or YOUR DADS but theme is from the old days
