I have a 2004 Mazda3 with MAP (extended warranty) until the end of August 2009.
Now, I'm paying the $100 diagnosis fee because I feel they will find something, but the problem with dealers is that they dont go above and beyond the problem of what you tell them. So my question to you guys is, what should I tell them to look for? The mileage on my car is 113k and I do enjoy some spirited driving.
My current problems are:
- I hear a strange/loud click when I reverse and take off, but it is intermittent. It only happens sometimes. I think it might be either the engine mount, CV boot, or struts. Anything else you can think of?
Another problem is rust along the driver side footwell. It is only bubbling, but hopefully they can fix it. They fixed a lot of body rust on my rear trunk lid and rear wheel house outers.
Is there anything else that could be fixed under warranty?
Please let me know,
Thanks

$100 diagnostic fee??
Why not just bring it in, get an oil change and say... hey, my warranty is about to expire can you do a 360 on the car?

Heh, I just got my oil changed about 1k ago and I run full syn Royal Purple. I don't want any Castron Semi-Syn in my car now.
Thanks for suggestion tho.
They claim its a thorough diagnostic, which they will be removing wheels and checking many other things.
My car is in excellent working condition besides that annoying knock. I really feel something is not right.

2004 - 2009 is 5 years...
I thought warranty starts on the year for the car?
2005 Mz3's warranty starts on 2005 even if it's sold in 2006 or 2007.
Sorry.. I might be wrong :(

uhh NO
it starts the DAY you buy the car
you'd know this if you read your owner's manual

I bought the car a year ago (at 82k) with MAP warranty on it. I'm pretty sure the last owner told me it was either 160k or 2010.

Are you driving a 5 speed or auto?
Before my 08.5 I owned an 05, 5speed. At times, I found that the ebrake was sticking and when I drove.. at about.. 20-30km/h you'd hear that click or something.. and when it was sticking you'd feel as thou something was holding you back.
If it's not that issue, then I have absolutely no idea

Is it same for used cars?
I swear to god I read somewhere.. something like...
some new cars are treated as used cars because their warranty start that year or something.
my bad if im wrong.

On used or new vehicles it starts from the time the vehicle originally went on the road.
ie. if a 2007 is purchased new on 08/19/08 - it expires 08/18/11 (comprehensive) or 08/18/13 (power train)
if a 2007 is purchased used - and it originally went on the road 08/19/07
it expires 08/18/10 (comprehensive) or 08/18/12 (power train)
hopefully this helps.
If anyone is wondering about their warranty expiration
just log onto

TSB on the Driveshaft clicking noise (http://www.finishlineperformance.com/pdf/mazda3/bulletin/03-003-05-1486b.pdf) .. that could be your problem if it hasn't been done before.
if not, it could be your engine mount, the Passenger side (No.3) engine mount will most likely need replacing on your 2004. that should be covered under MAP.
also, see if you can get your Belt Tensioner replaced under MAP. it's a $600 job, at the dealer, otherwise to replace belts and tensioner.
is your intake manifold making a "fluttering" sound? if the intake manifold hasn't been replaced, the butterfly valve in it will eventually go and, outside of warranty, it is an expensive repair.
do your windows clunk when you lower them then immediately put them back up? if that hasn't been repaired, that's another warranty item.
front wiper arms rusty? that's another item they can warranty
seats squeaking? warranty
car making a wha-wha sound? wheel bearings? warranty
car making a knocking/clunk sound when turning the steering wheel? strut bearings going? warranty
that's about all i can remember that i've had to deal with on my 04...

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a lot.
I tried telling them about my wiper arms rusting and they told me to f-off. Said some random excuses. Should I push harder?
I was thinking of just painting them myself.

the rusty wiper arms have a US Tech Service Bulletin on them (http://www.finishlineperformance.com/pdf/mazda3/bulletin/09-005-08-1881.pdf) ...there should be an equivalent Canadian TSB. push harder or try another dealer. you don't have to stick with your current dealer if they're giving you a hard time. some dealers balk at doing warranty work because they don't get paid right away.
for reference, here's a list of more US TSBs applicable to the 3 (http://www.finishlineperformance.com/store/pages.php?pageid=12)

So, I got my car back from the 'Diagnosis'.
- Apparently the front control arms need to be replaced (not covered under warranty).
- They replaced the No. 3 Engine Mount under warranty.
- Rear trailing arms need to be replaced, including the bushings (not covered). Bushings I understand but the arms themselves should be covered.
- They claim the clicking noise is due to some issue with the driveshaft, which again is not covered under warranty, even with a TSB out on it. They even threw away the TSB I printed out and put in the passenger seat of the car.
- Rust on rocker panels is being investigated.

which dealership are you taking your car to?
From Mazda.ca in the Warranty section, with regards to MAP and what is not covered:
What is not covered: Of course, no protection program can cover every possible circumstance. The following items, which are considered a maintenance repair, are not covered by Mazda Added Protection plans: Glass, lenses, sealed beams, light bulbs, trim, mouldings, bright metal, upholstery, Miata soft-top fabric, paint, body, exhaust system (including catalytic converter), brake pads, brake shoes, brake rotors and drums, clutch linings, shock absorbers, McPherson struts, steering rack boots, drive axle boots, outer tie rod ends, ball joints, batteries, spark plugs, spark plug wire sets, distributor rotor, hoses, tires, side view mirrors, belts, external shift linkage, fuses, wiper blades, adjustments, water leaks, wheel balancing wheel alignment, accessories (except Dealer installed Mazda air conditioning kits).
nowhere does it mention that Front Control Arms are not covered, nor the Rear Trailing Arm; and, unless you've been rallying, you've driven over some boulders or tall snow drifts with a block of ice in it, or you smacked into a curb real hard, your control arms and trailing arms should not need to be changed.
similarly, driveshafts are not in the list of "not covered" so, if there was an issue with the driveshaft, it should be covered.
find another dealership.

Link to the MAP PDF on mazda.ca (http://www.mazda.ca/files/MAPWebE.pdf)
even if all you had was the lesser "Major Component Coverage", the control/trailing arms, and CV joint/driveshafts would be covered.
