Yesterday's rumors have been confirmed: Michael Schumacher will take Felipe Massa's place for the remainder of the 2009 Formula One season.

A Ferrari spokesperson said Schumi's return hinges on the seven-time F1 champion's ability to pass the FIA's physical (we doubt that'll be a problem) and he'll be back in full-force on August 23 at the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

Schumacher has been under the employ of Ferrari as an advisor to the team since his retirement in 2006, and although Massa is reportedly well on his way to recovering after sustaining a serious head injury at last weekend's race, Schumacher will take his place for the remaining seven races of the 2009 season.

I'm a big F1 fan, lets see what he can do with the F60. I think Kimi might be a bit red faced.

I really wanted to see how drivers like Vettel and Hamilton would do against someone as good as Schumacher. I was never a fan but always had a lot of respect for the mans skill behind the wheel. He has some sneaky moments but you can't win 7 championships with out a huge amount of talent.

The man is a God in my books. And that's coming from a cleric. Too bad the car isn't really competitive this year. That being said he still has the skills and the tenacity to make the car 1/10th of a second faster per lap. Even last year he took the car around the test track and was just as fast as Massa was.

The guy is truly unbelievable. I would have loved to see him and Lewis Hamilton race at their peaks.

Did any of you guys watch Hungary?
Kimi pulled of a 2nd place, Mass would have done better if it wasn't for the pipe to the head. The car has improved a lot over the past few races.

to be honest, I saw this coming since he retired...a man like him can never stray too far away from a fast race car...

look at Zanardi, legs or no legs, that man's still fast...

I was pissed when he left. I still think Ferrari pushed him to retire too early. He was fast when he left and he would have been fast the year after. Just think of what that season would have been like. Schumey and Kimi fighting it out while Hamilton and Alonso were fighting amongst themselves. That level of testosterone would have been unheard of.

It would have been a dream season.

Yes they are. They are looking for a buyer.

As for Schumi calling off the comeback, it really is a shame. I was really looking forward to it as were motorsports fans everywhere. It garnered a lot of press for sure.

That said, I don't blame him considering his injury. Open wheel racing is brutal on the neck more than any other body part. Hell, even in karting you can pull almost 3G around some turns and during hard braking. A hell of a lot more strain in an GP2 or F1 car. The neck is always the first thing to go.

LOL. Keep em'. They'll be collector's items soon... BMW has had a pretty miserable season this year for sure. It is a shame they are leaving F1 though.

There were tons of rumours last year that Kubica was going to move to Ferrari. Those have now quieted down and Alonso seems to be the big rumour. A lot of people think Raikkonen will retire from F1 at the end of this year and focus on rally racing and that it will open a spot. Either that, or Ferrari will dump him from the team. Personally, I doubt either scenario will happen. At least, not as long as Ferrari is producing a competitive car and they have been making some strides of late, as have Mclaren.

All this said, there is a lot of uncertainty still with Massa's health and long term ability to get back in an F1 car. There may be a spot opening up regardless.

more like he realized the car is still a back of the pack'er and didn't want to have his reputation changed... too bad in either case since i know i would have been glued to the tv for all the remaining races
