Alright, I'm a bit pissed.

I take my ride in to get a tensoner replaced under warranty. They complied and brought my car in right away.

About an hour and a half later I get the car. I usually do a once over (kind of like when you get a rental) for any damages. I do a double take on my door and notice 3 scratches (horizontal) which resembled that of a cat mark. I was like WTF.

I called the service guy over and he quickly called his manager. Then I noticed 3 scratches going vertically and they were quite long. He saw me wiping my finger across and was surprised to see it too.

He was nice enough to be willing to fix it. He told me to bring the car to 427 Auto Collision on Tuesday and they will wet sand and polish it. If they cant do that then maybe work something out like repainting.

Now I don't mind wet sanding it but shouldn't they reapply another coat of clear for compensating the removal of the old coat?

I don't want my vehicle door repainted. I think it brings down the value even more and it's never as good as original, even if its a horrible Mazda paint. To me it just increases the chance of rusting and what not.

A buddy of mine told me that they may be able to wet sand it and hide most of it but if they could get the dealership to give me free oil changes for the remaining of the warranty.

What do you guys think? What dealership should I take my ride into next time around that will be more cautious about such things?

Phillie86 i personally dont like that tittle that you chose for this thread or the way you presented it as the dealership did own up to it and is willing to fix or repaint it. You could have asked a question about wetsanding paint or repainting areas rather to put the dealers name in shame

Back to your question about wetsanding no it will not cause it to rust any faster the sand paper you use for this kind of job is so fine it will take off next to nothing. If they want to repaint it they will probably sand down a minor area repaint that small section and you will never be able to tell. I doubt they will do a whole door

If the door has to be repainted, you will probably be hard pressed to tell that it was. That is granted you are using a professional shop. They use different methods to ensure the paint is as close to a match as possible. Some use computer scanners to ensure the paint is as dead on as it can be.

As for repainting, they would have to do an entire panel at a bare minimum to blend the paint. You cannot just spray the small scratch area as it would really show.

Actually, I like the way he posted it. He identified that the dealership made a mistake and than told us that they were willing to own up to the mistake. That shows that they are a reputable dealership. I've seen so many posts where it's a story about the dealer scratching their car or doing something wrong and not owning up to it. This to me gives the full story of the dealership and that they know they aren't perfect.

You are incorrect at work we have people that come in for those types of touch ups and when they are finished the colour match and repair is unoticeable. For the dealer it is alot cheaper just to have that spot repaired rather then repaint an entire door. Because now you have labour for removal, strip off all the old paint and repaint the door to top it all off.

I dont see a problem with how he posted it at all...he isn't lying its the truth. If one who reads the thread wants to open it up and see that something has been rectified then all the better but I dont see a prob with the title.

I wasn't trying to displease anyone here with my post. I was actually very calm with the situation and so were they. I agree the management was really good with dealing with the issue. I guess it just baffles me that a mechanic can be so careless with a brand new vehicle.

Like, this is a dealership, not a small shop down the street.

I also know mistakes happen, and hopefully this is by far the rarest case they encountered of damage.

Thanks for you comments guys.

I also have a family member who works at 427 Auto. I know the work that goes on their first hand. They do match the paint by the code, but also with a machine that matches the paint to its current faded state so it would be accurate.

They are also a shop that does things properly. They will do the entire door and blend it out instead of doing just the small section. It's the proper way and also the best way to make more money.
