View Full Version : Wipers set to automatic - seem to have stopped completely
Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with the wipers set to automatic. I never could get the ring to make the wipers more or less sensitive then today in the big down pour they just stopped sensing anything altogether. I don't know if, ironically, this is because there was so much rain that they just stopped working thinking there wasn't rain on the windshield.

did you double check the stalk to make sure it is not in the top position? That is the position that turns the wipers off.

Yep, stalk is not in the top position. Also the very top (mist) doesn't mist anymore.

do your wipers work at all then?..if you set it to low or high?

If I set to low or high yes they work. The also work if I pull them toward me to clean the windshield.

Yahhh the sensitivity feature is crap, doesn't make any difference on mine either.
I'm assuming you tried to 'reset' the wipers by turning them off and on again? Sometimes mine get less sensitive (or oversensitive) suddenly and a reset usually works...
If they just aren't working take it to a dealer and have them look at it!

The auto wiper sensitivity dial does not seem to make much of a difference. Having said that I keep it at the "+" and seems to work fine. When there is more rain, the speed increases.
Let the dealer have a look at it. If your car is under warrenty then they may replace it for you.
I had the dealer check it when I had my 24000 km check last week. It seems to be working okay. I think the wipers stoping working on auto when it was in the down pour was a glitch. The last down pour it was fine. They told me that the change in sensitivity is not dramatic so you won't suddenly notice it. I'm fine with how it is but just wanted to make sure it wasn't broken.

you stated further up that the mist doesnt work anymore does it work now? It could be one of 2 things either a bad switch which i doubt or it could be a failing PJB

Yeah it works. I was just stupid and thought that it sprayed when you moved it to the "mist" as I hardly ever use it so I forgot that "mist" is a misnomer (or mistnomer) :) :chuckle

the switch doesn't have any control electronics in it, so I doubt it's going bad... if anything is going bad, it's either the PJB or the sensor

the switch does have a circuit board and i have seen switches go before wouldnt be the first time. the windshield itself usually goes before the sensor does as the windshield screen on the sensor starts to bubble causing malfunctions but in most cases gets noticed by the auto lights not working. Our testing equipment at work is smart enough to pinpoint the problem in mot cases. I have seen a few incidents where it was completely wrong but most of the time its very accurate

on the mazda3 (unlike the 6 or the protege), all of the control electronics are NOT on the switch... all the switch does is provide a signal source for whatever wiper mode you select... the actual controls are on the PJB... so while there's likely a PCB in the switch, it has nothing but circuit paths in it
