View Full Version : Warning to all powdercoated rim owners

Yesterday I went check out some new tires for my car! I stop in at a shop that advertises all over the place thinking Im going to get a deal. Make the arrangment to buy 4 tires at a good price and the first thing I ask the manager is " DO YOU DEAL WITH POWDERCOATED RIMS". He assures me that they only deal with high end wheels and not to worry. The work is in progress and I go to the back of the shop to get something from my car and I look down in horror at my rims. 3 of my rims have huge chunks taken off them that could only have been done by an idiot with an air gun. I go to the manager to complain and he first questions his employee and he gets denials that it was not him and that I brought my car there in that condition. I walk around my car and start picking up the chunks of paint off the floor and agree in a very sarcastic tone that I must have brought my car there in that condition. So to make a long story short, I got 3 tires for free if that's what you would call free and messed up rims. So make sure when you get tires installed you tell them to use kid gloves on them so the same thing doesn't happen to you!

It might help others out a little more if you did mention what shop did this. I know I would avoid them and appreciate the information.

Our advertisers do not provide members kick backs. Rather members speak from personal experience. I have taken powdercoated rims to both Simply Tire, and Tires23, and both times everything has been great.
Your situation is unfortunate.

This thread wasn't about advertising for Simply tire! It was to inform other people to watch out for mistakes that can happen to delicate rims!

Yaa with the free tires I received! Equals the amount I paid for powdercoating! I touched up the rims this morning and it's not all that bad! I would rather have my mint condition rims though!

free tires aren't worth it..i would have asked for the money to fix the damage they made and to go somewhere else for tires.

I will stop by Quy's shop and see what he can do for me! Free tires for a couple of chips isn't that bad considering it would happen eventually just from everyday driving!

Not to burst your bubble , but chips like that don't happen from everyday driving .... unless your off-roading...

At least you got something out of it! What tires did you end up getting?

Understood. However, it is natural when people see a shop being careless :AH's like this and then not taking any accountability inititially, that they are going to mention a shop (in this case Simply Tire), that they trust explicitly and where they have had nothing but good experiences and furthermore, also have the reassurance that if a mistake were to happen, it would be dealt with promptly and professionally.

It is no different than countless other threads on here regarding mechanical work gone bad etc. and everyone stepping up to say take the car to Jimmy at Street Performance, or Oakville Mazda etc.

So, maybe you don't like Simply Tire and that of course is entirely your choice, but if you're going to post a thread like this, expect to have people give you feedback and recommendations. There was no malicious intent here and the people are just trying to help you out.

dude u took it to wheels for less?!?! are u insane those guys are pathetic. i wouldnt trust those guys to put on steelies on my ride. should have took it to a more trusted tire shop. u should have bought the tires and had them put on at simply tire or tires23 or whatever shop u feel comfortable with.
sorry to hear for the damage tho i would honestly get those dumb farts to pay for it.

Out of curiousity, what is involved in repairing powder coated wheels?

Does the entire wheel have to be sandblasted down again and re coated or can the affected area be recoated and baked? Will it bond to the existing powdercoat?

Sorry to see these nice wheels all messed up.

Once I find out from Quy, I will let everyone know, as long as it's ok with Malcom.

What i dont understand is how do you damage rims like that? I use my airgun on every rim at work and i have NEVER managed to damage a rim like that. It absoloutely baffles the mind

1st pic looks deliberate...2nd pic looks like they turned a big socket onto the finish...3rd one looks like they tried to jam the wrong size socket into it or the airgun just wobbled...

looking here with my friend, I personally don't understand the damage either. for those tuner lugs, the key is long and narrow, and since these are the oem MS6 rims, the socket hole is already bigger than aftermarket rims. there's a chance they didn't even bother using the key and just jammed another tool in there.
