Check the rear end links, they could be loose.
Any funny handling? Squirrely rear end, or bouncy? Blown rear shock?
Is your car stock?
Check to see if the spare tire or jack is loose.

EDIT* Just re-read the op; ignore my hanlding question.

Yah I've been told a knocking sound might be related to rear trailing arms/bushings...

All linkages good. Could not replicate.

Check your lugs and make sure they are tight. It could be a loose wheel.

Also, when your end links were checked was the car on the lift or on the ground?
