A police officer has been charged with racing after he was allegedly clocked at a high rate of speed - while behind the wheel of an unmarked squad car.
The OPP were patrolling the area around Peterborough by air on Thursday when they spotted the vehicle.
The unidentified boy in blue, who is a member of Durham Regional Police, was heading north on Highway 115.
An OPP officer on the ground pulled him over, and impounded the vehicle for seven days. The accused, a ten-year veteran of the force, has had his driver's licence suspended for the same amount of time.
A 34-year-old male has been charged with:
Race a Motor Vehicle.

Odd how they neglect to mention the rate of speed he was travelling.

How do they impound a squad car? That OPP cop must have a real bug up his ass to charge basically one of his own!

True, but I'm glad to see that he was charged or at least he did get some form of penalty. Police officers are not above the law and should always be penalized the same way any other citizen would be penalized.

Have to agree, was it a squad car? towed it to the office and back on the road the next day, I thought there was an unwritten rule among the police society that they look the other way if one of them breaks the rules...I guess not always unless the cop was a PR and others were out to get him...

Wrong place, wrong time. They made an example of him to keep public support about the "street racing" law.

I don't get it... Cops are exempt from speeding laws in ontario by the Highway Traffic Act section 128:
Exemption
(12) Where a by-law or regulation passed under this section becomes effective, the rates of speed prescribed in subsection (1) do not apply to the highway or portion of the highway affected by the by-law or regulation. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 128 (12); 1997, c. 26, Sched.
Fire department vehicles and police vehicles
(13) The speed limits prescribed by this section or by a regulation or by-law passed under this section or set under section 128.0.1 do not apply to,
See: 2005, c. 26, Sched. A, ss. 17 (6), 34 (2).
(a) a fire department vehicle while proceeding to a fire or responding to, but not returning from, a fire alarm or other emergency call;
(b) a police department vehicle being used in the lawful performance of a police officer’s duties; or
(c) an ambulance while responding to an emergency call or being used to transport a patient or injured person in an emergency situation. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 128 (13); 2009, c. 5, s. 40.

It was a chick and she was going 100mph in a 60mph zone (160 in a 100 zone).

It doesn't say that,
It says lawful performance of duties. If she's on patrol of the highway, thats a lawful duty isn't it? The other two (firefighters and ambulances) have explicitly written, "responding to an emergency"... whereas for the police it does not.

I think the cops set these things up...Then use the publicity to justify their own motives.
It's kinda like giving guns and ammunition to 3rd world countries, like the U.S did.
Don't think it doesn't happen...:whoa
My dad is a staff sergent with the OPP currently, I was talking to him about the 50 over rule on the way to Kincardine this past Sunday.... Apparently Fantino is out for blood and he wants officers who break the rule treated just as harshly. My father even said Fantino has pulled over and charged five drivers himself in the last year or so for going 50
over... Crazy!

This is something I've heard also...and apparently, he does go after speeders himself...
or so they say...
obviously, I personally do not agree with the street racing/stunt driving law in general, but this kind of stuff sounds a lot like those "tough sheriff" myths to scare ppl into submission screaming, "The chief is out for blood". A story like that probably does more deterence than all the street racing deaths we hear about.
I've also heard Fantino is a real prick in real life...lol...and I tend to believe that more so than anything else about him...show me a ticket with him as the ticketing officer...I want to believe!
