hey all, i bought the new 80GB ps thinkin it would be backwrds compatible like the old ones, but sony feels they offer enough games at the ps3 level so theyve removed the chip, does anyone know if i can have the chip installed to get it back, or is someone interested in doing a trade for an old 80gb for the new if you dont use the backwards compatibility?

that "chip" is not available for purchase. might as well try and find one of those 60GB versions and do an equal trade with someone who doesn't care for backwards compatibility.

There is actually a 80gb model that does allow PS2 playback. Unfortunately Sony released so many versions, many people got confused. Only the 60gb and these limited 80gb models play ps2 games. I wanted the the PS2 capability so I picked up the 80gb version a couple of years ago.

The 60gb model plays all ps2 games while the 80gb model uses an emulator and there are a few ps2 games that won't work on the system. Plus these two models have 4 usb ports and call the card readers. More current models have a lower number of USB ports and no card readers.

One of the reasons they removed th PS2 play back was to cut down on the costs of the system and lower the price so that it would be more competitive with the 360.

ya ive gotta find someone to trade with, because it seems all the old versions are now gone, and playstation.com says all its systems are no longer backwards compatible all the way through the lineup.

why do people buy iphones? or crackberry's. Because they have everything u want in one package lol. I dont want to change systems to play an older game if I don't have to.

older models of PS3s are prone to lens failures etc. (only have single lens) and they're out of warranty. It will run you $150 to have it repaired by sony. Newer ones like your 80GB have dual lens, least chance of lens failure.

I would say keep your bnew 80GB and if you really want to play PS2 games... get a cheap PS2 :)

*edit: If I had the PS3 BC(backward compatible), i'll trade it w/ you! :chuckle

80GBs do have B/C but only around 80% of the Games. The 80Gb uses Software Emulation and not a Emotion Engine (Chip) like the 60GB, which is 100% b/c.

+1, 60's are rare for that reason and who ever has one usually wants to keep it.

the original 20 and 60 GB models of the PS3s come with the hardware emotion chip. I thought the second-generation 80 GB came with a software emulator instead, while the 40GB had none. I guess follow-on 80GB models removed the emulator completely.

I agree with Klumzi - keep what you have a buy a cheap PS2. In the long run you'll be happier. A lot of the first-generation PS3s had trouble playing PS2 titles (colours would be off or washed out; sometimes whole textures would just fail to display, etc).

wow your lucky! old PS3s have 5% failure rate.. compared to xbox's 33%! :chuckle
now with the new dual lens, it's down to less than 1% i think :)

alright well looks like im SOL lol, the new ones have the emulator but it only plays some psone titles, B/C has been removed completely after sonys big annoucement of their new lineup. They said people buy ps3's for the blu ray and ps3 games so they no longer need the chip, and that there are enough games out for the ps3 that its no longer neccesary.

You may not be SOL, I have a 80GB PS3 from a while ago that I got from a family member...absolutly nothing wrong with it, I believe it is the B/C compatible version but I need to double check. I've never used it for PS2 games so im not sure but I can check tonight if you are still interetsed.

It's kinda whack to get a PS3 and then play PS2 games on it. If it came with your PS3 consider it a bonus, but unless you PS3 is broken forget about PS2 altogether.

Stop living in the past, time to move on.

lol but theres just so many good games from ps2 that arent gunna be replicated, and if the technology is out there why not try to have it.

Was never a Sony guy until I got the PS3. When I got my PS3 I was able to enjoy all the ps2 games I missed.

Doesn't matter how old the system is, I still enjoy my retro gaming.....Genesis, SNES, Dreamcast and all those compilations from Tecmo, Capcom and SEGA.

True, but why download when someone may already have the disc? Plus, why take up valuable Hard Drive space?

Well if you have the disc..then you save money lol...i just did it cause mine wasn't original and was ruined, so i downloaded it. Back to HDD usage yeah its a waste..but what can u do....most of the games i own require installation of 5GB lol.....and 60Gb is small and fills up fast..but anyway u can always up the HDD space.
